Original License Plates?
I heard somewhere that we could use the original license plates on our trucks, such as I have a 72, could I use a 72 plate. The only stipulatoin that I heard was that the numbers couldnt match up with any plates currently in use. I was wondering if any one else had heard of this and if it was true

Re: Original License Plates?
Varies from state to state.
Here in Michigan you can use a plate from the year the truck was built, cost is $35 to register it but it never expires. BUT It is for parade/club use only, CAN NOT be used as a daily driver.

Re: Original License Plates?
All depends on your state.
Ohio will let you do this, only if you are registered as a historical vehicle, and that severly limits the amount of driving you can do. IMO, the state is giving up some free revenue by not letting us run dated tags. I know I for one would be willing to cough up an extra 5 or 10 bucks a year to do this. So figure that number, plus, the savings of not having to make my new plates... But hey, what do i know. Call your local DMV, or better yet, look on line on the DMV's site. |

Re: Original License Plates?
We have an "Antique Tag" tag in Ms. that cost me $35 (this was 5yrs ago) and it never expires. If you have ever had to buy new car tag in Mississippi you would be more than happy to drive an antique.

Re: Original License Plates?
it can be done in tx, it has to be registered as antique but i have a choice of licensing "classic" or "antique" - classic allows more privilege. Your registrar where ever you are can tell you how it is done.

Re: Original License Plates?
I was slightly wrong, I licensed it as "Classic" --passenger car, motorcylce, or light commercial with gvc of one ton or less 25 or more years old. I could have gone antique--but more driving restrictions. They actually issue a set of modern plates and I pay an additional yearly fee to run my 1967 tx truck tags that they inspected.
http://www.dot.state.tx.us/vtr/spplates/allplates.htm I also run classic insurance on my 67 C10 and 85 C4 combined full coverage no deductible for about $320 per year--some restrictions. Last edited by dennislbrooks; 12-21-2005 at 10:47 PM. |

Re: Original License Plates?
In Colorado you can't run old plates unless they are '34 or older which sucks because I have a restored set of '72 Colo. truck plates that get to just hang out in the garage.

Yank, you got hosed! I bought mine January 2000 for my 71 for $25. It says Antique Car, I noticed since then they added Antique Truck as an option. Oh, I hear you on that new car tag thing... My 2005 GMC tag was over $800 (Cheap since I live in the county. Would have been $1300 plus at my old address.) Which leads me to another question: Why are our roads SO crappy? Virginia roads were nice and my new Impala SS tags were $35 back in 1995!

Am I reading that right? $1300 a year to register a new vehicle? Or is that a one time only fee?

Naw, that's only for the first year! Each year they tend to go down as the value of the vehicle depreciates! My wife's 2005 Altima tag was a little over $500 last January. The window sticker on it was $23K. Sticker on my GMC was $34K. Even though I bought for $27,525 while GM was running the employee discount price program, the tax assessor when by the sticker. (And they wonder why people commit registration fraud on their tags! Ever seen any Wal-Mart trucks with an Arkansas tag, you know--they are based in Bentonville, AR. Every truck and trailer I have ever seen has Oklahoma tags.)

Re: Original License Plates?
Yes, You can use old plates in Missouri. You have to use car tags, truck ones will not work ( At least I haven't found a truck tag that does). There has to be at least be one letter in the tag numbering. It is a one time fee and you are set for life, no more inspections or nothing!!! I have old tags on all my cars and trucks. Call the DMV and they can tell you if a tag number is good to use of not. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Re: Original License Plates?
Texas guys,
After 25 years, you can register it as an "Antique" or "Classic". I do antique. It costs $55 dollars for 5 years registration and no inspection required anymore. You can either run the year of manufacture plates or the Tx official "Antique" plate. I try to always get a proper set of year of manufacture plates as the antique plates they give you are ugly. There is no reoccuring fee to use your old plates, they inspect them once and give you a 5 year tag to bolt to the corner of the old plate. There may be more stringent guidelines on "Antique" versues "Classic" in Texas, but after 11 years of driving antiques all the time, never has anyone questioned me whatsoever as to where I was going or how much I was driving. Cops got bigger fish to fry than some old car guy busting the restrictions on an antique plate.

Re: Original License Plates?
Tx Firefighter you ever register anything 75 or newer this way? Are you stuck with the official "Antique" plate? I am trying to figure out what to do on my 77 Cheyenne. They quit stamping the year on the plates in 74 expect personalized or specialty plates so I don't know what they will allow.
I do have a set of new license plate stickers that are 1977's. I don't know if they will allow me to use a later plate that didnt have a year stamped on it if I put the 1977 stickers on them or not? Got any ideas?

I have my 77 Blazer registered as an antique. I have the freebie "Antique" plates on it. They are uglier than a sack of buttholes too.
