i have figured out just about everything to overhaul a 72 tilt column but not able to figure out how to take that round like retaining washer that has the 4 tap threads for the tilt knockle... i don't know how it slides off or whatever off the last two pieces of hollow shaft that holds that last part of the tilt housing body...i have pictures of what i am talking about however i don't know how to attach it to this URL message or on this page... it spins, it has a few tabs that stick threw holes in the length of the outside shaft of the column... it will not pull out or forward enough to allow it to come out... there must be some other trick that i don't know... the bottom part where the right angle shifter arm is, i think is welded to that inner hollow shaft... i have a total parts bad column where i cut it all up so i am aware of the grooves in the inner hollow shaft but still no idea how to get the retainer out without bending something, and that is not how they would have built it... help! thank if you can... todd

Todd - That is a real bear to get out. Some times it comes out easy and most times not. It is necessary to remove the shift tube first. Remove the lower bearing (retainer clip, retainer cup, and bearing) and rotate the shift arm to the slot and drive it out (factory had a special tool for this). Be careful not to ding up the top of the tube as it has to fit back in the shift bowl on reassembly. With the shift tube out of the way, the retainer plate can be accessed.

thanks bob and john... i noticed that there is a tool that is shaft tub removal tool... not something you can get at napa so guess i will attempt to fabricate one

If the clip and lower bearing is removed the tube can be driven out using a 1" X 3" board driven against the lower shift lever.

I looked into making a tool but it would have to be pretty precise as the wall thickness is very thin. I never had any that would not come out using a piece of wood (having rebuilt dozens of this type of tilt).
