Grilled

Those white plastic clips for holding the inner grill to the outer are a joke, right? I see how they should work, but there's no way they're going to push in far enough for their lip to hook into the slot in the outer grill.
And how do you figure out where to drill the holes in the outside edges of the grill for the rivets?
Bzzzt.
Thanks
Paul

I don't have any white plastic clips, did you get a new grille or something?

Yep, new inner and outer.
On my 72, the inner grill has some rectangular slots that line up with square holes on the outer grill. They fasten together using pieces of plastic (what I called clips) that are rectangular to match up with the slots on the inner grill, and with a square "nipple" (sounds funny) that is supposed to push through the opening on the outer grill. You push them through until they catch on a lip and then insert a screw. Problem is, mine don't go in far enough to catch. Story of my life.

Originally it would have a 9/32nd size head screw and it would go into a steel clip on the back side of the aluminum. Where is your original?

Interesting.
The original grill has a total of 10 mounting holes - 6 on the bottom and 4 on the top.
All are squares to accept the square plastic mounts except for the 3rd one in the bottom of the passenger side. This hole is round and has the metal mounting clip (still attached to the original outer grill).
The new inner grill has 5 rectangular openings on the bottom (nothing for the round hole on the outer grill 3 in from the bottom left) and 4 on the top.
I know it's original. I still have some of the original plastic mounting tabs.
What do I need to install the new?
Thinking about bolts and some washers.
Thanks

If you use bolts, nuts, and washers, I would suggest using rubber grommets or some method to allow some movement between the outer shell and inner grill. The grill is large and subjected to twisting and I believe that the original fasteners
were set up to keep from cracking the mounting ears because they will allow some movement.
