Cutting coils pros cons

I was thinking baout cutting the coils on my c20. I would only lower the front about 3 or 4 inches. I dont really care about the ride or handleing of it seen's how the only track it will see is a drag strip. I was going to use probably a 15 in wheel. What are some of the pros and cons of doing this? and Does anyone have a picture of a truck setup like i'm describing?

I would cut 1 full ring (no more, or no less). You will get a 2 1/2-3 " drop, & will need to trim the bumpstops off the lower a arms. Leave a pc of the steer stop, & use a traction bar snubber for the new bumpstop. my longhorn was done this way, but she also runs 1/2 ton rotors/spindles & has a 1 1/2" body drop......pics http://community.webshots.com/user/hotrodhorn L

When you cut the spring put the end that you are not cutting into a bucket of water... Heres my truck with one loop cut off..

Yeah, I wouldn't cut more than a coil or you're going to run into some camber/alignment issues that won't be able to get corrected. Also, cutting an even coil off allows the coil to be fit back into the spring pocket for correct fitment. If you wanna go lower, you need to pony up the extra bucks and get some drop spindles.

I have done it many times in the past with no negative results. I have used everything from a cutting torch with the spring in a bucket of water (already mentioned) a cut off wheel on a high speed grinder, a Sawzall, and even a hacksaw....

I also cut coils a lot, without problems.

You mentioned 15 inch wheels on your C20. I've been told that a 15 inch wheel won't clear the big brakes on a 3/4 ton, and that's why they all came with 16's.

I am not sure how they would clear disc brakes, but my Longhorn had 15" white wagon wheels on the rear when I got her. I doubt that you will find anything in a 15" 8 lug, other than the white or chrome wagon wheels. The aluminum wheels(being thicker due to casting) would not clear the brakes for sure! L

I was looking at bfgoodrich drag radials but, they only had them in a 15in wheel. What other drag radials come in a 16in wheel?

BFG does offer 16/17/18 drag radials, but they seem to be all low profile, & dont get over about 26-26.5" on the height. On the 15" wheels for your truck, a 15x8 usually has most of the offset on the outside.....a steel (chrome, or white) in a wagon style or modular should fit you truck(rear anyway). You can run what ever you want for "street"..... he!! go 16" ,& get some nice wheels. Go 15" on the rears, in the drag radial.The BFG's you wont want to run on the street, save em for "race day", & mount em on those cheap "ugly" wheels He!!, you will never make those BFG"s "hook" on the street anyhow(too much oil,antifreeeze ect) best of luck, L

Mickey T's Has some non DOT street styles in 16, not sure of the sizes though. As far as 15" 8 lug wheels, steel ones will fit I have a set but forget any type of mag wheel.
