need help with clutch
69 c1o that came with a six and three on the tree. After frame off put rebuilt 350 with the three speed but converted to floor shifter with hurst shifter. trying to get tranny to shift seems all right when the engine is off but will not go in gear tryed multiple adjustments and tricks to get more push on throw out crawl under truck and take access cover off and can see clutch seperate from pressure and flywheel. new pressure plate, clutch disc and tob but we used original flywheel from six bolted right up and seems ok. could it be the linkage or something else had to take a break i was getting really po any help would be great. dave

It sounds like you need to make the bottom clutch linkage rod longer to disengage the clutch. Just 1 thought, or step before that....pull the tin pan off the bell......there shouldnt be more than say 3/8" tween the throwout bearing & the fingers on the press plate. if you have more than this,you could have some "missmatched" parts. the 6/250 flywheel bolts right on the sb(262-350), & works fine. the same wheel will bolt to the 396-427 BB mills with no issues. The 400 sb is a 1 off, as is the 454 BB .IMO,your pcs work, if you have the proper throwout bearing best of luck..... L

What happens if you have the truck in gear (clutch pushed down) and start it ? Does the truck try to move ? Did you have the flywheel turned before installing the new clutch ? Could the clutch disk be installed backwards? Springs go toward the pressure plate side.

My TRANS AM was doing that it was the throwout bearing fork.The guy said that it was not holding the bearing right.I put a new one on and that took care of the problem.You might also change out your ball that holds the fork to the bellhousing.Worked for me.Hope this helps.

I'm not sure how the clutch is depressed on a '69, but on my S-10 I was having similar problems. I had a bad master cylinder / air in the line. If applicable, bleed the heck out of your slave cylinder! It is a real pain to get it completely air free. Even moreso if you are doing it solo.

My guess is the clutch disc is in backwards or the throw out bearing doesn't match the pressure plate. There was a short bearing and a long bearing depending on the pressure plate style.

thanks for all the replys this really helps. Yes i did try starting truck with truck in gear and clutch depressed and the truck does try to move. On another thread here somewhere someone did suggest that there are two throwout bearings a long and a short one? LMC only shows one going to try to make a longer temp bottom rod almost dead sure that we put disc in the right way i think it was marked anyway to check i will look for the 3/8" today but i am starting to get the look from wife after spending ALL DAY IN THE GARAGE i will post back thanks a lot DAVE

Lengthen the lower rod and make sure it's in the inner position on the clutch fork. There are two positions on the fork.
Make sure it's got the cast iron piece on the end of the rod that indexes into the clutch fork too.

txfirefighter glad to know someone else gets up early and starts thinking about trucks i saw the to hole and the inner hole should give it more throw going to make a temp rod out of oak but if i have to make a perminate? on that metal is prtty hard any idea what i could use dave

Yes, there are two different length bearings. If the pressure plate has flat fingers then you need the long bearing, if the fingers stick out in a cone shape, then the short bearing is needed. If you bought a set, then it should match. Using the short bearing with the flat fingers would cause it not to release. Pesonally I think the raised finger is a better design.

update and thanks for all the help Made a longer temp lower rod and seemed to shift ok got a piece of 3/8 rod and made a better rod and worked about the same only problem was i had to preload the pressure plate springs by compressing them, then try the clutch really not working right at all somethings ain't right with current setup the bearing is right on the clutch forks and compreesing them jacked up the rear wheels so i would not smash into the garage again what would it be like if we had reversed the disk dave

If you're having to adjust it to where the pressure plate is preloaded, the throwout bearing will live a very short life, as it'd be turning all the time.
It does sound like the other guys are on the right track about having the wrong combination of throwout bearing and pressure plate.

like others have said, I think its possible the disc is in backwards. the side that has the damper springs in a raised part of the hub goes to the pressure plate.
its also possible the disc may be sticking-binding on the input shaft. as far as adjustment goes, the TOB should be about 1/8" away from pressure plate

I put a disc in backwards once. It was obvious because it made awful noise. The raised part of the disc's hub was grinding on the flywheel bolts.

Take a measure between the throwout bearing & the press plate fingers, with the throwout pushed all the way back toward the trans. You should have in the range of 3/8" clearance.......If you show more like 1" +, you have the wrong throwout bearing for the setup. I have to agree, that a disc in backward would tend to make one he!! of a bunch of noise. L

is it possible the flywheel has been turned at some time if so youll have to shim the flywheel out i had the same trouble put a 80 thousand flywheel shim behind the fly wheel worked perfect just mo

First of all thanks for all the advice AN UPDATE i think we might have solved the problem I did and looked for all of the things that people adviced Then took everything apart and set the system to hold the tob about 1/8 inch from clutch forks and tryed seems like everything is fine I will post pictures of the new lower rod Wish i had the guts? to lay under truck while running to see how everything works AGAIN THANK YOU dave

Backwards Clutch disc . Very grouchy makes lot of noise especially when clutch pedal is pushed in.
