tuning 250-6

heres one for all you 250 guys... im in the process of fine tuning my 250 in my 74 driver, and want to see what success you have had with tuning them (what timing adance, distributor springs, plugs, carb adjustment)... It is all stock with no power steering and no power brakes... Im looking more in the fuel economy department than all out performance (cuz there is none with the stock 6 of course).. and yes it stil has the stock 1bbl Roch MV carb, just rebuilt and single exhaust).. thanks fellas, once i get to know more ill post more.. promise...

Easy as pie

I always follow a few simple steps that seem to make it go easier.
Check, clean and gap plugs.
Check points for pitting and set
Check dist. cap and rotor for wear and or cracks
Check fule filter (I installed a clear inline filter)
Warm engine thoroughly
With vacuum advance line plugged:
Set idle to 550
Set timing to 4 degree BTDC
Check vacuum off of carb, usually I get solid 12 to 15 lbs
with no needle bounce
(If you get a wobble in the needle tune will not help)
Reconnect vacuum advance,
recheck idle should be about 850 to 950
With vacuum gauge and rpm meter in place turn mixture in till idle slows to 750, then at 1/4 turn intervals increase mixture
screw to get close to 20 lbs vacuum.

Recheck the no advanced idle and timing.
Recheck advanvced vacuum.
I end up going through idle set and adjusting mixuter about 3 times to get it set.
Takes about an hour start to finish.

Hope that helps.
I call it my old Chevy VooDoo
