need help w/Edelbrock carb - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've got an Edelbrock Performer 1805 carb. Right now my truck seems to be running lean as it is detonating at WOT. I guess it could be that the timing is too far advanced also maybe. But for now I'd like to focus on the carb. I don't have the owner's manual for it and couldn't find any on Edelbrocks website. There are 2 screws on the front of the carb, I'm assuming idle adjustment would be one, what is the other? Also, how hard is it to tune one of these? I've never had to mess w/ a carb before. I talked to a master mechanic today who specializes in muscle cars and he told me to junk it and buy a Holley. I don't want to throw away a perfectly good carb just because nimrod doesn't like working on Edelbrocks. I need to try and work with what I have. Any info is greatly appreciated.

*edit: Forgot to mention I am getting extremely poor fuel economy right now as well. ???

Both of the front screws are for the idle mixture. One is for each side of the carb. If you're running lean at WOT, you may want to re-jet the secondaries. You'll need to take the air horn off though to get to that.

This link is for the Performer series owner's manual. Could not fine one for the Thunder series, but the carbs are similar enough to make this info useful.
Buy the calibration kit for the 1805 and start experimenting.

Thanks to Patrick (pjmoreland) for sending me the owner's manual! GMan, I'm bidding on a calibration kit right now for my carb. Hopefully nobody snakes it and I'll get it for cheap. I've heard a lot of good things on this board about the Edelbrock carbs, so there's no reason for me to junk it. I know I can figure it out with some trial and error.

I didn't pay close enough attention to your original post to realize you have a Thunder series carburetor. The manual I sent you was for the Performer series. Sorry about that. If you email Edelbrock and ask them for the Thunder series PDF manual, they'll send it to you.
