Tranny identification question.

I know that this has probably been asked a million times on this board, but now I guess it's my turn.

Anyway, I have an SM465 tranny and I'm trying to figure out what year truck this might have originally been mounted to. If that's possible of course. Here's the marking that I had gotten of of the tranny (which was stamped in front of the shifter lever)

3901131 (I couldn't tell if that last number was a 1 or a T though)
GM 31
A 283

These are the only numbers that I could find at the time. My garage is full of crap and the lighting wasn't very good

Thanks in advance everyone,
Larry

Re: Tranny identification question.

A283 is a date code. January 28, 1973 or 1983. The older 465s have the bottom two bolts that hold the tranny to the bellhousing coming in from inside the bellhousing (threaded holes in the tranny), while later models have all four bolts coming in from the tranny side. Early model 465s ('68 - '72 era) will have a second electrical switch on the tranny (besides the backup light switch) to indicate that the tranny is in high gear for the TCS system.
