Smile my new '79 GMC Sierra

I don't want to cross-post, but I am very excited about my newest addition... a 1979 GMC Sierra Grande C15 4x4. It served my grandfather for many years as a hunting then ranching truck. Is there anything you guys can point out for me to keep an eye on? At this point, everything is in good working order. I have already swapped out the OEM 6014 sealed beam headlights with 6024 Silverstars.

Re: my new '79 GMC Sierra

Welcome to the board Not really any one thing that I know of but the site we usually refer to working and great info on our trucks is 73-87.com owned by a fellow board member here. Also try 73-87chevytrucks.com for parts also owned by another board member.

BTW: I've got books on the 79 series if you need info let me know.

Re: my new '79 GMC Sierra

Wow! Thanks for the info - those are some dedicated folks on those sites. It looks like I will probably be dropping some coin there before too long.

Cool... I have already confirmed that the engine is indeed the venerable 350ci 4bbl.

Books? Like mechanic's service manuals?

Thanks, man. You are very kind - she has been rode hard, but never put away wet.

BTW: I am looking for some new (bigger?) tires. The current shoes are about worn out. Any recommendations?

Re: my new '79 GMC Sierra

Does the truck look like it is at the factory ride height? It looks high to me, but what do I know???? Those old tires are lost under there!

I'm not sure yet. Right now, I want to get her back into the "reliable" column. The steering is real loosey goosey, and there is some cancer working on the bed.

The transfer case on this thing requires quite a bit of finesse to operate. Does anyone know if it is okay to run the transfer case in HI-loc or should I keep it in HI only? Also, I am turning about 2500rpm @ 60mph. Does this sound okay?

I managed to remember my camera on the way to work. So, as promised, here are a few more pics with the new 33's. I apologize for buying such cheap tires.

I got the drag link, right tie rod, and steering box replaced when the old girl was in for new shoes.

Next on the agenda is a visit to the only transmission shop I trust.

Thanks...

"snatch block"????? Please help an ignoramous - what is that? I feel kinda dirty saying it! I assume you are referring to something near the winch, or the winch itself... My grandfather used the winch many times to extricate himself, but I do not know just how badly he was stuck.

Wow - cool. I just won an ebay auction for a manual. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but I'll let you know what I lack once it gets here. $5.00!

That interior is sweet!! I have those same door panels but they're shot to hell with the Texas sun. Did you or someone else replace the interior? I want those style door panels but can't find them with the chrome trim.

Re: my new '79 GMC Sierra

They are original, and I plan to get some Lumar window tint to help protect them and the seats which are original. Apparently, the exterior used to be the same color as the seats before my grandfather got a wild hare to change things.
