I would love to powder coat my frame and suspension parts..but hey I'm on a teachers salary..Any alternatives that look good and are durable?

Zero-Rust is another choice, can be sprayed, rolled, or brushed--or all 3.

POR15 is harder, and more durable than anything else listed here so far (including the powedercoat) AND is a rust converter.

I originally tried zerorust - black. However, I didnt think it was all that durable, the finish looked good but was easily scuffed and scratched.
I ended up putting on eastwoods chassis black extreme - satin. So far I am totally impressed, however, time will tell.
POR-15 is another good/great choice, it was a little too glossy for my tasted and the sell a semi-gloss black and I have used it on a few things but it seems to seperate a bit during the drying process which gives it a swirly gloss/flat black appreance, ok for small surfaces, but not sure the outcome on a frame...it is extremely durable.
Also, how well you prep the work makes all the difference. I had my frame sandblasted, took two hours and cost me 150.00

You have to paint over the POR anyways, so get the normal gloss stuff, and cover it with some run of the mill paint.

Epoxy paint. Rustoleum makes some good stuff.

If you decide to go balck and epoxy prime. GET BLACK TINTED PRIMER. That way when it gets chipped they will not be yellow or grey scratches.

POR 15 is hammer proof. My buddie did his frame with it and we hit it with a 5 pound hammer and it did not chip. If I would have knowan about POR 15 I would have blasted my frame then used the POR 15. He just painted over the rust and it's not smooth enough for me.

POR15 is the only way to go.

Like Andy said, it needs to be painted, so get the POR15 paint rather than the normal POR15 stuff. They sell a whole line of paint and other products.

Once you POR-15 something you better like it cause it's gonna stay for a long, long time. I started applying POR to my frame and later decided to go with Eastwood Chassis Black. The POR was VERY HARD to remove with the pressure blaster, so hard that I had to score it with a utility knife so the abrasive had somewhere to get ahold of. The abrasive was bouncing off like it was armor plated! I've found that POR-15 is real finicky to apply and store, so if you go this route read and follow the directions closely or you'll be disappointed.

I used rustoleam, If your truck is low enough, nobody will ever see the frame anyway.

Powder coating is the way to go for trailer queens and show stoppers. IF your absolutely sure you wont do some cutting or welding on the frame at a later date or all that money you spent on a flawless job is not flawless any more. I had to cut and weld on my frame for header clearance….glad I didn’t invest in powder coating.

Yes I am jealous of you guys with the powder coated frames, there’s no denying how good they look

Never used por15 but I may give it a try on my next project.

POR15 works well on frame's buttt--it interesting in that it needs a somewhat rougher surface to really hold well. Too smooth and it doesn't hold as tight. Also as Andy says, you got to get the metal clean of any oil, grease, or loose dirt for the paint to hold and then you really need to paint over the por15 for UV protection. That said, it will last longer they you will keep the truck.

Is that por 15 rust preventative gloss black on that frame, or the por Hardnose paint with the hardener additive? That frame looks great.

I will be sandblasting my frame myself and I want to use the silver por 15, with the marine clean and metal ready. What do ya'll reckon would be enough to do a whole frame and suspension with two coats plus the inside floorboards and undercarriage, two quarts? A Gallon? Thanks.

The only problem I had with POR is on a flexible frame, it will crack as the frame flexes and it doesn't.

Buy your POR15 on Ebay. I bought a complete engine kit in Chevy Orange for 19.99. That's cleaner, silver POR15 and chevy orange paint plus brushes, scrubbies, tape, etc.
