ignition question
About six motns ago my truck wouldn't start & a friend of my dad checked it out and told me it was the ignition cylinder. He ran a wire fromthe dist. to the battery so I could move the truck. I had to remove the wire from the battery to shut my truck off. I bought the igniton cylinder and Ithink I can install it but my question is what do I do with the wire thats connected to the dist. I don't know if there was another wire hooked there or what. I just thought I'd ask the members their opinion on the diagnosis and the wire before i paid someone to install it.

Re: ignition question
There should be a yellow wire that is connected to the distributor. You'll want to reconnect it....
ooppps.. you connect the yellow one if you're running hei. if you are running points...I think you connect it to the coil?? someone correct me please. |

Re: ignition question
Yellow wire goes to the + terminal on the coil (points). If there has been a HEI conversion it's hard tellin' what goes where , but there should be a plug that goes directly to the distributor.

Re: ignition question
Charles, look on your fusebox, there should be a blade type terminal between the uses labelled Ign Unfused. You plug your wire from the Distributor into that. It will power the distributor with the key on and kill it with the key off. (that's the way I wired mine when I converted to HEI). I'll try to post a pic of what I mean.

Re: ignition question
There's some great information on how to wire an HEI distributor in the following thread. Scroll about 3/4 of the way down past all of the inline 6 stuff.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=148346 The way krue describes it will work great. That's how I have mine wired, but I really like the way it is done in Shifty's thread. It's really clean. I'm planning on rewiring mine that way eventually. Last edited by pjmoreland; 01-08-2006 at 09:06 PM. |

Re: ignition question
If he just removed the original HEI hot wire and let it drop down, it might still be there waiting to be plugged back in.
