Cool Parking brake - ratchets back

My parking brake pushes down and locks and stops the truck just fine. But, occasionally will unlock and snap back up. Anyone know of a fix??

Re: Parking brake - ratchets back

Mine did that, I fixed it with a good cleaning(steel brush) and greasing it with spraycan grease.
I guess all the moving parts were a little rusty and dirty.
Hope this works for you.

Re: Parking brake - ratchets back

I had that happen on a Buick once. The teeth on the parking brake that allow it to ratchet were actually worn down. I had to replace it with a junkyard part.

I've tried the lube. It is in the famous GM "wet foot zone". Helped a bit but, still comes right back just by bumping the pedal.

Slonaker: How tough is the R&R on the E-Brake assembly?

Re: Parking brake - ratchets back

When I replaced mine, I was about 15 years younger and 40 pounds lighter. As I recall, it was not too bad for something up under the dash. I don't fit under there too well any more.

I think there were a couple of bolts that held it to the firewall and a cable that went through the firewall and connected to the emergency brake cables under the vehicle. That was so long ago that I don't remember much else.

Re: Parking brake - ratchets back

Very easy to change in these trucks! Gotta loosen it up, undo one of the clips where the cable attaches to the drums so you can get some slack in the cable, then you can grab the cable inside, and remove it from the clip in there, remove the pin that holds the cable coming from the floor to the housing, undo two bolts on the firewall, and one bolt inside, then carefully pry the release handle off, and slide the whole thing right out.

Pretty self explanatory once you see it
