One wire alt ?
I put the newer style alternator with the surpentine drive from an 86 and now need to energize it. Wires are black and pink with a black stripe. I am assuming the black would be for the amp guage and the pink with black strip could be hook straight to the hot on the alternator. Is this right or am I anal. Anyone know for sure? Thanks

Re: One wire alt ?
Its a three wire, one lug for hot, and the regulator plug. Didn't find what I needed on the link either. I was thinking I could run the hot to the pink/black striped wire on the regulator and it would work.??

Re: One wire alt ?
Wow! I could have made a bunch-O-Bucks on this one because I did this on my 56 Chevy Pickup over 20 years ago, with a regular alternator, I should have patent it, oh well, maybe next time.

Re: One wire alt ?
No, I just wanted some conframation on the wires. I have been doing this conversion for lots of years also and understand everything said here and on the links, however this is the newer style and was just asking a question if someone could identify the wires. Here is a pic of the plug

Re: One wire alt ?
I have a 1 wire alt out of a 89 chev truck and it is inly 1 wire(brown) in the plug you posted a pic of. Ran it to keyed "hot" then connected a larger wire from the lug on the alt to the battery. Worked for me.

Re: One wire alt ?
The would be a 2 wire.... one wire alt would have.... one wire.
It would be aftermarket, and not stock. And I'll bet a kick in the daddy parts, that you'll NEVER see one in the junk yard. |

Re: One wire alt ?
I have a 1 wire alt on my 72 truck, it is a A/C delco part
My original alt with the external regulator quit so I put the 1 wire alt on as it is a quick install There is only 1 wire from the alt to the battery but there is no provisions to hook up the amp guage and the output is fairly low (about 40 amps) I will probably change to a 3 wire stlye when I need more power output, like when I actually get a radio installed

Re: One wire alt ?
What kind of 86 did that come out of? That plug looks newer than that.
