starter issue??? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok here is the story
Took the truck to work this morning. Started fine. Went to a lunch meeting. Started fine. Went to leave the lunch meeting. A couple clicks then will barely turn over but starts. Stop for gas about 5 miles later, A couple clicks on the first try but no turn, then on tries after that one solid click and no turns. Get it towed back to my house and return to work for 3hrs. Come home and she starts right up.
When it would not start i checked the wires on the battery and starter. None were loose. Gas station had an express lube thing and they checked the battery and said no probs there.
Bad starter??
Let me know what you think.
I am about to go pull the starter and have it tested. Other than that i don't know

Sounds like the starter to me. I had a similar issue with my '83 Ski Nautique. Replaced the starter and it was fine. It could also be a loose ground. That will have the similar symptoms. But you're right to go have the starter tested to be positive. No reason to buy a new one just to replace it and find out that it's not what the problem was.

check you cables and make sure they aren't coming apart inside the caseing

Like truckdude said check the cables.I chased a problem like that for 2 years before I found it.Of course I was young and dumb at the time(Younger and dumber).

I've had a similar problem that turned out to be the negative ground to the frame came loose. But I didn't get any clicks. It either started or didn't.

could maybe be heat saturation too...co you have a heat shield installed? chevy is notorious for this

I thought I had replied to this earlier, guess I must not have hit the right button. If you have headers, the heat will fry the wiring in the starter. Results are exactly what you have, it gets difficult to start when the engine is warm. Does okay when things are cold. I went to a mini-starter on both my 69 and the kids S-10 Blazer. I also made a heat shield for the 69, the blazer had one.

I had the same problem, caused by heat from the header. Replaced the starter and installed a heat shield. No problems since then.

I had the started check this morning and they said it was fine. When i got it out last night the activator wire from the ign looked pretty nasty so i made a new one last night. I have not been able to test this yet. Other than that I am not sure. I have also decided to put in my new headers since the starter is out so hopefully i get it all done tonight. Never know.
On a side note where is the correct place for the negative battery cable mount to the frame at? The PO has it on the motor mount, never had a problem so i left it alone.

Its always cheaper to check your wiring first,dont just look at it pull it loose,clean the ends look for damage from heat or fraying and corroded battery terminals cause more starter and charging problems.

You want your main battery ground mounted to the engine block because your starter draws a lot of amps.Then ground your frame and body from the engine.
