Steering box bracing
I just installed a cross over steering system on my 72 blazer, I have a tremendous amount for frame flex when I steer the truck. They do not make steering box braces for the first gens or at least I have not seen any. I am looking for suggestion on how to fix this problem before it breaks the frame.
I was thinking that by welding in another cross brace from one frame side to the other near the steering box would help but I don't know if it is enough. |

Re: Steering box bracing
I believe the brace you are refering to is the additional plate that fits in the frame where the box mounts. What I am talking about is a brace that ties the frame where the box mounts to either the engine crossmember or the other side of the frame.
I checked my frame and the rivits are fine and there are no cracks and the reinforcing plate is in tact. |

Re: Steering box bracing
If you can find one, this is the factory steering brace

Re: Steering box bracing
I read/heard somewhere that the bigger problem is the 'travel' of the factory boxes.
From the factory, they will want to travel (turn) farther than the lockout on the steering system will allow, so @ lockout you are still getting all the forces of the hydraulics trying to push, that's what breaks the frame. Fixing the travel of the steering box first will prevent that issue. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
