Question Replacing door hinge pins

Sorry if this has been asked before (I searched but did not find anything)....

Does anyone have a procedure or any insight on replacing door hinge pins? I have two trucks that need it.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Replacing door hinge pins

Easy as pie. 1st, take some kind of marker and mark an outline of the hinge on the door. That way, you can put it back in the same place when completed. Next, take 1 hinge off the door at a time, making sure to support the door from falling. Put that hinge in a good vice, and take some kind of steel punch, and beat out the pin. Make sure you clean out the old bushings. Put the new rebuilt hinge back on in reverse order. When I did mine, my pins were fine, just had to replace the bushings. Get bronze ones. Chevy dealers and auto part stores have them. If I remember right, I believe they are 1/2" bushings. Another member on here can verify that or not.....

Thanks 70GMCer....I'll give it a try....I guess there is no way to do it without removing the hinge is there?

Re: Replacing door hinge pins

When Classic Truck magazine did the restomods on the '68 SWB big block pickup , they showed a tip on getting the hinges reinstalled where they came from. They drilled a hole into the body of the hinge, as it mounted on the door , and onto the body. Then, they inserted a drill bit into the hole to realign the hinges exactly where they needed to be.

Now, this will only work if they have not been moved from their original positions and if they are in good shape, even though they need bushings/pins. Gotta be sure the cab isn't tweaked, and so forth. But, I gotta replace mine, too.

Re: Replacing door hinge pins

No...you really have to remove the hinge to do this. Those pins can be a bear to beat out. Trying to do that with them on the door would be a trick.....

There is a how-to link that was on the early classic website, might be the same thing. Had it saved in my favorites.
