Exclamation Shrouds: V-6 vs BB ??

What's the difference between a V-6 and a BB one? I know that look about the same but, are the mounting tabs in the same location? the one in my V-6 has been badly cracked and been wanting to replace it, anybody knows?
Thanks.

Re: Shrouds: V-6 vs BB ??

Not sure about the opening placement, but the opening is the same diameter. However, thickness for the BB is approx 1" to 1-1/2" deeper than the V6 version.

Re: Shrouds: V-6 vs BB ??

Here I am. I would love to give you a straight answer, but..... Anyway, according to the 67-69 GMC parts book, some are the same between Big Block Chevy and GMC V-6. Part #3924932 is the standard shroud for '68 and '69 V-6's, including '67 305's with A/C. It also fits '69 396 V-8's. There is another V-6 shroud listed for '67 351's with A/C. That one is part #3903824, and it doesn't go on any 396 V-8's. What year and what size is your V-6? Does the shroud have a number molded in it?

Re: Shrouds: V-6 vs BB ??

Bob, that first number you posted, is it the same for '68-'69 trucks with A/C or just for '67 305 with A/C? my V-6 is a '69 305E with A/C, I haven't really looked at the shroud for a number, where should it be located?

Thanks for all the responses guys Paul.

Re: Shrouds: V-6 vs BB ??

I think I still have a shroud from a V-6 truck. It is different than a BB one. I think it is not as wide? I will have to dig it out again. They do "Look" the same though. I will sell it if you need one.

Re: Shrouds: V-6 vs BB ??

If you look on top of the core support on the passenger side(battery side) you will notice a captured nut location 2inches toward the center line from the standard radiator holddown location. This is for the GMC V6 radiator and narrow shroud. The shroud is the same in appearance to the big block shroud except it has 2 inches off the passenger side - fan diameter is the same and same location as BB. I just looked at 1 in my basement and measured the difference. The lower edge of the core support also has a provision for the lower holddown location 2 inches from the standard. I believe the V6 shroud would work with either a four core or standard radiator if it was 2 inches narrower.

Let me know if you need pictures or the shroud - Bob

Re: Shrouds: V-6 vs BB ??

3924932 also fits 1/2 ton '68 and '69 305's with A/C, too. The numbers on my shroud are molded in the edge of the fan opening at the bottom. My shroud (3903824) is wide, and the radiator/shroud brackets go in the outer captured nuts on the core support. I have the inboard nut that Bob Moore is talking about, but it is not used.

Re: Shrouds: V-6 vs BB ??

The V-6s usually have smaller radiators, it's hard to get them to run warm enough to keep the frost off the windows up here with a big radiator!

Re: Shrouds: V-6 vs BB ??

There were two sizes used on the GMC V6, a small one and a large one. The large one is part # 3924932 (as stated earlier), the same as 69 big block. The part number is molded into the shroud. It is small and hard to find. Bought one from Wes and it bolted right in.

Re: Shrouds: V-6 vs BB ??

Yes. Mine is the correct smaller one, for the smaller radiator.
