new guy intro

just joined and i just bought my dream truck a 1970 c 10 stepside. im a novice when it comes to working on her though. i picked her up for 4k and she looks almost perfect. body is straight and almost no rust at all. shes got a 292 staight 6 w/ headers and dual exhaust w/ 3 on the tree. plain jane farm truck i found in a classic trader. after driving her for a while here is the list i compiled to add..
-power steering
-power brakes
- rear roll pan
-lower her
-maybe convert to automatic
-im building a custom fiberglass center console and adding buckets

* any feed back for the most cost effective ways for my add ons will be great. i dont want to make her a hot rod but i want a hot truck to pull my bike around. any tips for cool add ons will be great too. thanks all! tessie and i appreciate this forum

Looks about like the find I made at the same price ( http://satellitehead.com/gallery ).

Power brakes is an easy upgrade, just costs money to buy the brake booster. Hookup is easy.

Power steering is a little more expensive. I just swapped my stepside over, but I'm doing a radical overhaul on mine so it wouldn't be the same for you. Basically you'll need to swap out the gearbox and pitman arm and you'll need to get all the power steering brackets, pump/resevoir and everything for the inline 6, which is a pain in the ass to find . You might as well rebuild the front steering while you're at it (new tie rods, new idler arm at least).

New rear roll pan and the buckets are pretty trivial. For the automatic tranny, you'll need a new steering column with the linkage for an auto - might as well get one with tilt steering while you're at it. Again, expect to spend a couple hundred bucks. I also got rid of my 3spd tranny - you'll need to remove your transmission crossmember and move to an automatic tranny crossmember. Let me know when you get to this point, I can give supporting pictures or you can just look at my gallery above and see how I hacked mine out. I have a spare completely refinished and rebuilt stock automatic tranny crossmember I can sell you cheap with all the hardware. It may be necessary to get a new/used/modified driveshaft if the auto tranny is shorter/longer than the 3spd.

That 292 is a great engine. Don't let go of it cheap. The 250's are a dime a dozen, but there is definite race build-up potential on the 292. I had a 250 in mine...

One of the forum moderators, krue, does a killer job of keeping up on all that stuff.

Whenever you're thinking, "man, I'd love to know how to do XXXXX", go search in that index post I just linked and you'll possibly find an article. Heck, even I have an article in there with tons of pictures explaining how to upgrade to using a normal distributor on that inline 6 engine instead of using the craptastic points+coil system you prolly got in it now.

Very nice truck. I started with about the same ideas, upgrade my 68 K20 to pwr steering and such, went out to find a new front diff and ended up buying another truck that already had the auto trans and front disks, pwr steering. My thought was to pull the front clip off the 68 and put it on the 72, now I'm not sure. I'll probably end up with 2 separate projects, Good luck, this board is a great resource...

Nice truck. Keep the 292 in it. Make it a "unique sleeper". Well-taken care of farms trucks IMO are usually the best. My truck was a farm truck, and the owner was so presice. Anyways nice truck. Definetly a keeper.
