Primer that will not rust??

Does anybody know where I can get some good primer that will not rust. I have a compressor and can get a paint gun to spray it. I want to sand it down and primer it. Get it ready for body work and still be able to drive it on the weekend.

Re: Primer that will not rust??

Primer doesn't rust.... metal does

Sorry, couldn't resist.... I used a primer/sealer combo on my truck. Help up pretty good for 9 years....starting to look like crap though...

Re: Primer that will not rust??

eastwood rust encapsulator. it even comes in rattle cans, no compressor needed. prep by removing the old rust and shoot it, i think. read the instructions. it's not a complicated process like some of the other crap out there.

if you're down to bare metal, i believe you can use a self etching primer, but you need to be careful of what you put over it i think because i'm not sure everything adheres to the top of the self etching primer (e.g.. bondo won't stick to it - this is just something to think about!!)

Re: Primer that will not rust??

Zero-Rust is a good product. It comes in spray cans and gallons. The Zero-Rust people say that it can be top-coated with most auto paints.

Re: Primer that will not rust??

Take a look at DP40 by PPG, it's an epoxy primer that sticks like mad. You shoot it over bare metal, then do your fillers putties and workable primer on top of it. There are several colors, the DP40 is a greenish grey, the new stuff is actually DP40LF (lead free), but the older leaded stuff is better if you can find it. DP40 doesn't use a isocyanate hardener so it's safer to shoot in your garage. http://www.ppg.com/refinishftpsite/docs/p-196.pdf

Re: Primer that will not rust??

Sherwin Williams has a new line of "shiny primer" that comes in eight different colors. It goes on like paint and has a gloss finish to it. I think it is a body man's dream because it is weather proof like paint and when it comes time to wet sand, you will not need painter's guide to show any low spots. Just look for any left over shine. This stuff is great. The different colors allow you to prime with the color closest to what you will spray as a base coat, requiring less base coat to cover. I've heard of resto guys spraying it on then pushing the project outside until they were ready to continue the job. I used it on my 67 and also found that it fills better than most.

Re: Primer that will not rust??

Here are a couple photos of my cab with the shiny primer on. It is a little hard to tell that it is shiny because of the angle.

Is the cost reasonable? The primer looks really good from what I can see

Re: Primer that will not rust??

Slightly higher than the run of the mill dull stuff, but you will save in base coat and guide and the price is the same for all eight colors.

Re: Primer that will not rust??

I bought a gallon of POR-15 to prime my frame and some suspension components. This paint is supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread, not so however. Everything was repainted with a paint called RUST KILL from a company called MAGIK. It has held up to the elements and shows no signs of rust after 3 years and still has semi gloss finish when its washed. This is a primer but can also be used as a topcoat according to the can. I carefully put it on with a brush but it can also be sprayed on.

Re: Primer that will not rust??

I used the sherwin wiliams Medium red primer. It was basically the same colour as the base of torch red. Save alot of paint. But I also have over a $1000cdn in primer it this truck

Re: Primer that will not rust??

The cold weather has forced me to work on my truck in the basement, so it is all rattle can and brush priming any parts small enough to fit down there. I have been using ZeroRust gray on the backside of fenders and the grill. The outside of bare metal fenders and doors will be rattlecan sprayed with Specialty Performance Products Etch Prime Gray which is made by PPG. Both products seem to go on well and have tons of solids. The radiator mount was primed with ZeroRust, and I am going to try to brush on POR15 Black Coat and see if I can get away with no brush marks
I usually wear a respirator and blow the stink out the basement door.

DP40LF Doesnt dry for a good week, its gummy.

Good thing about that is, that you can follow it up with some Utech or K36.

Re: Primer that will not rust??

Hey Northcountry- Is it Spectraprime/Spectraseal ? Here's a link. There are a lot of different products, but the Spectra was the only one I found that came in a variety of colors. The description didn't say it has a gloss finish.
