Cheap Parts - Another Reason I Love My Truck!!!

So I noticed the other day that the truck seems to be pulling to one side. The tires are all properly inflated, and with it being a sudden thing, I suspect it is a calliper sticking.

I was talking to a buddy at work and I said that it would be a simple and cheap repair - - maybe $35 for a calliper. He said "no way, the callipers for my minivan are over $100 each."

So I called the parts store just to confirm and the prices were even better than what I thought - - rotors $70 and callipers $24. My buddy couldn't believe it. For less than he paid for a calliper, I can replace the rotors too.

Just another reason I love my truck.

I would check the rubber hose that connects to the caliper . They seem to be the problem more often . If you have one brake sticking , it is probably an internally collapsed line that is not letting the pressure to bleed off causing the brake to drag . Frank

Good point. I've read about this happening, but have not experienced this for myself. Is this something that is noticible from the outside of the hose? Like a soft spot or something?

I dont think you can tell from the outside . I had my truck start pulling in highschool . I put pads ,calipers, etc on and couldnt figure it out .I jacked it up and the wheel would not turn by hand . It also held itself at a stoplight . My neighbor said to change the hose since he had seen it more often than a sticking caliper . I have seen it several more times since . Frank

I had a firebird that pulled to the left hard when you would brake. I kept throwing parts at it, and yes, it ended up being the hose.

But when I was through I had some nice working brakes with the new calipers, rotors, pads, shoes, wheel cylinders.

If you can't push the piston back in the caliper, try taking the hose off then doing it.

Yeah, I paid something like $15 each for rebuilt calipers and $35 each for new hoses at NAPA a couple of years ago. LOTS cheaper than a Toyota or Honda...

Re: Cheap Parts - Another Reason I Love My Truck!!!

My truck brakes in a straight line now. Before I changed out the original hoses and calipers, it had gotten to the point where it would pull one way and straighten out when applying the brakes, then pull the other way and the straighten out when releasing the brakes. Rather strange behavior. In the meantime, the front pads were wearing out too quickly.

Like you, I'm glad it was a relatively cheap fix!

Re: Cheap Parts - Another Reason I Love My Truck!!!

I have had them stick in some pretty remote places in all but one case it was the hose more specifically the metal holddown clamp that the hose is routed thru gets rust between the clamp and hose and over time compresses the hose till problems occur I have cut the clamp and relieved the pressure allowing the brakes work as they should then bought or fabbed up new clamps problem solved on the cheeeeeep you might give it a try later Miike
