Door adjusting tool?

Can anyone tell me if there is a tool that will help with the adjustment-
alignment of our truck doors? It is a bear trying to hang these doors by
yourself and getting them adjusted corrected. I would appreciate any
help with this question.

Talking Re: Door adjusting tool?

You did not say whether the fenders were installed or not. (If the fenders are installed, it is a different proposition).

I start with the hinges bolted in place on the door and centered.

I cut a piece of cardboard (3" x 30") and place it on top of the rocker panel for the door to rest on. (A second thickness is added if the door edge is to close to the rocker). The door latch is installed into the door and the striker is installed slightly higher and all the way out. I then set the door into the striker and onto the cardboard, checking for clearance. Shims are added to the striker if more clearance is needed at the striker side of the opening.

The hinges are bolted up loosely to the front pillar and then clearances are rechecked all the way around the door. From there it is an itteration process where adjustments are made for the right clearance and the right alignment to the rocker panel. Once it is close, I try opening and closing the door. The door will usually drop in the rear so at some point in time, the striker is brought down so that the door will open and close easily. Once the body lines are lined up and clearances are set I move the striker in to get the door flush.

It gets easier after you have done a few dozen!

Good luck,

Jim

Re: Door adjusting tool?

Jim, thanks a million for the good advice. I do have the fenders off so it
will be easy to get to the hinge bolts.
