Harmonic Balancer ?

Can you use the harmonic balancer off a 283 on a 350? Summit just says small block for its balancers? I'd much rather not spend the money for a new one.

Re: Harmonic Balancer ?

You can but the timing marks were moved in 69, so you would have to compensate. The rubber in balancers ages, loses it elasticity and can slip. You will be far better off in the long run with a new one.

Re: Harmonic Balancer ?

Thanks Fred T, I bought a new one and installed it today.

Now here's a kick in the ass. When I bought this truck back in the summer, the po told me the engine was a 283. With the intake it looked like one to me so I had no reason to think otherwise. We pulled the engine yesterday to swap in a 350 and just for the hell of it, I ran the casting numbers through Mortec.com last night. Turns out the damn thing was a 350 all along!

Just goes to show that you can't take anything for granted.

Re: Harmonic Balancer ?

Was the casting number 3970010 cause gm made a 302 and a 327 with that same number. The 327 had an intake like the 283 with the oil filler in the front of the intake and the t-stat housing pointed straight ahead.

Re: Harmonic Balancer ?

Nope it's 3970014 which only comes up as a 350 in all the online searches I've done. The intake is probably what threw me off though.

Re: Harmonic Balancer ?

What size of balancer was on it?The 350 had a 8" and the 283/327 had 6 1/4" or 6 3/4" bal.
