CVR High Performance Products
I ordered and installed a Summit High torque mini starter a few days ago and I just could never get it to work right. I shimmed it over and over again, but I finally determined that it was not a shimming issue. It starts to engine as needed, but I could not get the pionion gear to retract far enough to "completely" clear the flywheel. Once the starter retracts it will just touch the flywheel and you can hear it. Not the pinion gear, just the tip of the whole assy. I called CVR High Perfprmance Products (actually make the starter for Summit) and spoke to tech support and he said that he has had only a 3 people ever call with this problem in over the 15 yrs and that they contributed it to aftermarket cranks. It as if the starter motor itself, not the mounting plate, needs to be shimmed back about an 1/4" to 1/8" for the pinion gear to clear the flywheel. He said that they would get their shop to design and cut a shim for me and mail it to me free of charge. Really, really great tech support, very helpful and actually cared about my problem. I highly reccommend them.
