Strange oil pres. indication

Usually an oil pressure reading will increase with engine speed, and drop on decel correct? Mine is the opposite, gauge drops on acceleration, once speed is stable the reading maintains the middle of the gauge, then drops to the first line above L. Then if I decelerate, the gauge will move up to the middle of the gauge briefly. Most noticable at freeway speeds. I wonder if there's air trapped behind the gauge or the gauge is just tired. I've only had the truck about a month. I pulled the heads last week for a valve job, they had to be completely rebuilt, all new guides, exh. seats, and replaced 2 intake valves, and 2 exh. valves. The bottom end appears to be solid according a cylinder leakage test I performed. The engine fantastic now - just the odd oil pressure reading.

I guess it's easy enough to swap out the gauge and see what happens.

Re: Strange oil pres. indication

I would swap out the guage and mke sure the line /connections are good if not check the pick up on your pump had similar symptoms with a 305 once turned out to be a sludged up pickup screen when you let off the gas apparently the crud in the screen dropped off due to lesser suction and let more oil up thru the systen thus an increase in readable oil pressure my .02 Mike

Re: Strange oil pres. indication

I would still watch it close for a few more days, If it goes back to doing it I'm inclined to agree with muddyole 69 I have had the same problems in the past with the pick up screen being clogged up. If you wanna cheat a little without pulling the pan off drill a 1/8 inch hole in pan at location of pickup screen and sray a can of carb cleaner in it, then seal the hole with a screw coated in sealant or jb weld.
