Looking for some Rearend gears

69 dually 1 ton short bed, trailing arm rearend with a ultilty body- I am looking for a set of 3:73 gears for it...the truck originally had a straight six with a 3 on the tree trans...but now, and before I got it someone put in a 327 with a 4 speed....top speed is 55mph otherwise it sounds like I'm going to blow the engine....It is going to be a sweet truck as I am continuing to plan the frame off restoration....very little rust and overall a excellent platform to start from....looking to go with a stakeside bed on it.......anyways enough about that, any help would be appreciated on the subject....I would also consider updating the rearend by putting in a newer style chevy, any ideas? I seems that you can't buy new gears for these trucks so I have started looking for some used ones or fabricating a newer trucks rear for my application...thanks for the reply and keep on truckin'

Re: Looking for some Rearend gears

What rear-end does it have? Is it a big, round one with a removeable centersection? If so that's the old Eaton rear, the best ratio you can get is 4.10's. If it's a 14 bolt you shouldn't have any problems finding a set of 3.73's. If you want to swap the rears all you need to do is cut the U bolt and shock mounts off and weld them to the new rear.

Re: Looking for some Rearend gears

Thanks for the info so far, it is a great start. I got some more info that might help me find the right gears: I was told by the Diff Shop that I should look for a HO72 10-41 or 11-41....Correct if I am wrong( I promise not to be offended) but to my best knowledge the HO72 is the Carrier type and the 10-41/11-41 is the actually gear sets I need.....Help please!!!! I am looking for info and the necessary parts if anybody can help me...thanks

Re: Looking for some Rearend gears

First we need to figure out what you actually have here....
There were no one tons with coils.
There were no one tons on a short wheel base
there were no 3/4 tons on a short wheel base.
That's the VIN on it....just the first 5 or so if you are paranoid of giving out that info.

Re: Looking for some Rearend gears

A coil sprung dually??? You sure you have a dually with the trailing arm rear suspension? If you do someone rednecked your truck up. If the truck is already set up for a coil spring rear (and you don't need the dual wheels) any coil spring 3.73 rear out of a 67-72 will bolt up. The was also the optional 3.08 rear (or was is 3.07). The 67-70 will be 6 lug rears and the 71-72 will be 5 lug. All 3/4 ton rears are leafs and will be 8 lug.

Re: Looking for some Rearend gears

I am 100% sure it has trailering arm suspension, I have been under the truck several times(so far)........this started out as a simple thread with a question on rearend stuff but now I think I should find out the past of the truck.......I still think it is a pretty cool find, just a little different than the others......I have a pic on my profile

Re: Looking for some Rearend gears

Guy at the diff shop is on the right track. The 10 bolt was the stock rear. HO52 is for 3/4 ton, HO72 is one ton. They have the same housing and center section (pumpkin). What you need is the pumpkin from a 63-72 3/4 ton with 4.10 ratio gears. the 41 is the # of teeth on the ring gear, 10 is the # of teeth on the pinion.

The swap is simple. Drain the lube. Remove the 8 bolts holding in each axle and pull the axles out far enough to slide out of the pumpkin. Unbolt the u-joint. Unbolt the pumpkin and stick in the new one. You can get the gasket at a local parts store. Tough part is finding the pumpkin. Check the for sale section. Put an ad there if you don't find a set. Find one locally if you can, weight is a killer for shipping.

Some of the older truck vendors sell new gears, they will fit right into your pumpkin. Cost for new gears starts around $350. And you will need to have your differential guy put the gears in the pumpkin.

Re: Looking for some Rearend gears

well, the 2 in the vin ...CS239Z makes it a 3/4 ton truck.

c 2 wheel drive
e inline six
2 3/4 ton
3 cab and chassis I do believe
9 1969
z fremont Cali

as far as I know, there were no daulie 3/4 ton trucks

*edit*
looking at your truck...

That is a modern utility box.... some one put that on there (somewhat) recently. What you *PROBABLY* have here.... a normal 127 inch wheel base (LWB) 3/4 ton truck, with the daulie wheels added, and then the daulie drums added up front.
Attached is what the *normal* utility boxes looked like back when these trucks were new. The boxes were actually added over the normal step side bed.

Re: Looking for some Rearend gears

Thanks for looking that up....Interesting stuff, it does have the utility bed, my thought is that somebody maybe just put duals on a standard rearend. Does anyone know if this is possible? The wheel studs don't seem too short and there seems to be no clearance issues with the tires right now....I don't know what to say.....Right now the truck is weighing in at curbside 5500lbs at the scales(driver and passenger)..... I would like to keep the duals for the funtionality and look of it, I am planning a frame off on the truck with a stakeside to take the place of the utility bed.....pic is available in my profile....speaking of which, can somebody give me a heads up on how to upload pics to the message board.....thanks for you patience, I am new guy to this thing
P.s. If anybody needs 68 camaro or 69 chevelle/ el camino parts I may have them...let me know ( am just

this is what Imake of the vin #you gave. c=conventional chassis2wd s=6cylinder 2=3/4 ton 3 makes no sence 9=year 1969 z=it was made at the fremont plant 87=it was the 87 truck made in 69 . check and see if there was a four after the three if there was that makes it a fleetside.

Re: Looking for some Rearend gears

67chevyredneck,

You could get coil springs in a 3/4 ton truck, mine has 'em. VIN is CE230S- 2wd, V8, 3/4 ton, cab and chassis, 1970, St. Lous, MI plant.

You can convert a SRW(single rear wheel) rear end to a dual by adding longer wheel studs.

That 34 thing is for the model number... not the VIN.
Take a look at the link I provided.

With that being said... is the SPID label still in the glove box? If so, whats the model number? That'll tell us exactly what your truck was on day one.

Re: Looking for some Rearend gears

Unfortunately the label was removed sometime before I gained ownership of the truck.....Well here it goes, the best I can come up with after reviewing everybody info is that I have a 69 2wd 3/4 ton SWB coil spring truck with a after the fact dually setup......I have not measured the wheelbase but I unless my eyes have fooled me I know it is a SWB frame.....wwwwwwhhhhh!!!!! thanks guys for all the info...now for my original question, the rearend!!! Should I start by counting the bolts on the center section, as I said befor the gear shop gentlemen told me that I need to find a HO72 to replace mine....looking for 3:73 gears, anybody know of a gear shop or truck shop where I can find so more freeway friendly gears...or I will even consider swapping out the rear for a modern one....any tips on this guys...and thanks again

Re: Looking for some Rearend gears

One way to will get 3.73 gears is to replace the rear with a 14 bolt full floater. You can get them at the junkyard. Since you have duals, find one set up for duals. This will also get you better brakes with the newer design.

What you need to do is measure the width of yours. You need the distance between the drum faces, that's where the wheel mates to the brake drum. It's easiest with a helper and a straightedge on each drum. Measure between the straight edges. Also measure the clearance between the tires and the inner fender and the frame. That will help so you know how much wider or narrower of a differential you can use. With that you can go to the junkyard.

I was thinking that someone here had posted that you could put the 14 bolt internals in a 10 bolt, but you needed to use the 14 bolts axle shafts. You might want to search, it wasn't that long ago.
