I just got my auto x-member from Teeitup (thanks dude!) - I've hit it with the pressure washer and then the wire wheel and brush - I don't have a sandblaster yet (baby due any day now) so I have to go with what I've got. HOW are you guys getting down in between the riveted on pieces? I really dont' want to disassemble and bolt back together. I've "run" laquer thinner in the cracks and pushed in a rag. It's not to be a trailer queen I just want to make sure my paint will stick.
Along those lines, am I ok with rattle rustoleum primer until I get my por 15 or Eastwood Rust Encapsulator? I don't want it to rust up yet or start storing paint until I'm ready to do more parts at once. Thanks for any input.

The only way to do it right is the first time, and that probably means taking it apart. I took mine apart. No big deal. Not sure about the rust. I bought a can of rust killer spray from wally world, then spray can primer and topped it off with some spray can black.... Someday I guess I'll do it "right."

For detail cleaning, Brake parts cleaner with the straw gets into nooks and cranies pretty good, but nothing is better than totally disassemble the part.

I took mine apart completely, then flapwheeled it, basically. Went to the store and got new hardware with poly lock nuts and some washers (per another boardmember's suggestion) to put it all back together. This is the end result (which I am about to sell, because I bought an aftermarket one from ECE):

It makes cleanup a LOT easier. Just do it right!! Not to mention, it is ten times easier to install when it's in 3pcs.

Looking at your pics shifty, I'll have to do some hammering too then while I have it apart - and I thought all the bumps and rough edges were "factory" hahahahaha.... now to see a man about a bolt......
