Oil pan replacement questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

When I did the first oil change in 12 years, I trashed the threads on my oil pan drain. I think replacing the pan is the best solution, but I have a question about the gasket I need to replace.

When I went to buy the pan and gasket, the parts guy asked if I needed the gaskets with exahust pipe packing or the one without. Anyone know which I need?

FYI, I have a stock 68 307 2wd with stock single exhaust.

Also, suggestions on gasket to use? Cork? Rubber? One piece or two? Specific gaskets brand reccomendation? And the pan? Anyone have good or bad experiences with specific replacement pans?

Gasket I would reccomend felt pro, and I dont think you will need the one with Pipe packing..

get the 1 piece felpro oilpan gasket// if your parts guy doesn't know what it is, go to another parts store

You may need the exhaust pipe packing after all. Sometimes, you have to drop the front of the stock exhaust y-pipe to get the pan out.

I DID THIS YESTERDAY!!! sorry i'm excited cuz later today we're painting the engine. we used a 1 piece felpro, rubber compound with metal around the bolt holes to keep it from warping anything, new timing cover gaskets, and some high temp silicone in the corners and around the front and rear .

While you have the pan off, clean the oil pump strainer.
