Transfer case/tranny questions
I have a 205 transfer case and a turbo 400 transmission. The piece that links the two is cracked in a couple places and leaking. I have been looking locally for a new one, but I am not sure what will interchange. Will one between a 350 trans and 205 transfer case work? Will one out of a 78' chevy work in my 72'? I have been told they are hard to find for automatic transmissions. Is there an aftermarket place I can find one if I don't find a used one? Thanks for any helpfull input!

The 205/400 combo is very desireable and hard to comeby. Only GM has the adapters for this factory setup, but Advance Adapters offers adapters for most trans to a 205. Advance makes cool stuff but it comes at a $. GM won't be cheap either...

A TH350 adapter will not work....

The NP205/Th400 is very desirable for the serious 4x4 guys. And very rare from what I hear.
I have the NP205/Th350 combo. I have never seen an adapter between the two that wasn't cracked. On the 205/350 there is a "drive sleeve" that couples the output of the tranny to the input of the transfer case. The sleeve is simply a splined sleeve that fits over both shafts. The oil in the tranny is sealed by an oil seal in the front of the adapter. The seal touches the drive sleeve like the front oil seal on a small block. I've never seen a 400/205 but I understand they are slightly different in that they don't have the drive sleeve. However I bet the rear of the tranny is sealed in the adapter somewhere. If this were my truck I'd save my pennies and get a brand new original adapter from GM. I believe Advanced Adapters defers to GM on that part since they already make it.

The adaptor should be about $200 through your GM dealer.
