Fuel Sending Unit..Which One?
Pulled my Sending Unit out today and trying to figure out which one to purchase. I have a thread on the parts board about purchasing one I just want to get the right one. My truck is originally a V6 truck but now has a late 70's V8 in it. I wouldn't mind changing to a V8 sending Unit I just want to know what's all involved and I guess I'll decide then whether it's worth it.
Can I get some pros and cons of swapping to the V8 sending unit? By the last pic you can tell what's wrong with mine.

Re: Fuel Sending Unit..Which One?
It probably won't matter if you are not looking for every ounce of performance on your top end. You can buy a piece of steel brake line to attach to the sending unit for a few dollars and bend it (with a tubing bender) to match the old line and replace the rest of the line from the cab to the carb. You have a nice truck and I would personally do it. If you are just cruising around in your truck you won't notice the 5/16 line you currently have.

Re: Fuel Sending Unit..Which One?
If your truck came with a V-6 originally, then it'll already have the 3/8 fuel line.

Re: Fuel Sending Unit..Which One?
I ordered a V8 sending unit for my son's 68 short stepside. The connector was larger than fuel line. Called the vendor and he said it must have been a 6 cylinder truck, so I ordered the 6 cylinder sending unit and it worked perfectly. While I was waiting I rigged up a reducer between the sending unit and the fuel line going thru the floor of the cab.

Re: Fuel Sending Unit..Which One?
I have a local vendor about 10 minutes from my house. I called him to see if he had a used one and for how much. Turns out he has a V6 sending unit NEW for $35, so I'm going down in the next couple of days to get it.
Thanks guys, Bryan

Re: Fuel Sending Unit..Which One?
That is correct,
2 bbl small blocks, and inline trucks have 5/16 fuel line. 4 bbl small blocks, and v-6 have 3/8 fuel line. I do not know about the few 2 bbl big blocks, no clue on them, but I would guess that all big block trucks got 3/8. The only thing I am confused about here... yellow 69 has a chevy... not a GMC. Only GMC trucks had the V-6. What's your vin read? Is it a CExxxxxx, a CSxxxxxxx or a CMxxxxxxx? |

Re: Fuel Sending Unit..Which One?
Not wanted to hijack this thread. I have replaced my sender twice yet my fuel gauge doesn't move at all. It just sits at the halfway mark full or empty. When I have the sender out of the tank and move it manually the gauge works fine, however installed in the tank it's a no go... Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: Fuel Sending Unit..Which One?
Your truck came with an inline 6... a 250 or a 292...not a v 6.

Re: Fuel Sending Unit..Which One?
I pretty much meant a 6 cylinder motor of some sort.

Re: Fuel Sending Unit..Which One?
Go with the V8/V6 one...redo your lines to 3/8. You'll not regret it.
