differential yolks
can you change the yolk on a 12 bolt without removing the cover. mine is worn allowing the u-joint to move back and forth and im finally sick enough of the vibration after almost a year to do something about it

Answer:no.You need to get into the rear.Your pinion bearing is probably shot.Next,expect a broken tooth on the ring gear.

That said, you can even change the bearing and race without removing the cover, but I wouldn't for these reasons. If you have had the problem for a year you may have metal grindings in the rearend. You can pull the plug and run a magnet in the grease or just drain the grease and look to see. The bearings have a preload setting that has to be correct or it won't live long. If you plan to keep the truck it will be cheaper in the long run to have a expert do it if you don't have the tools and experience to do it. Good luck on this whatever you decide to do. Yes. Remove nut-replace seal- add new yolk-tighted nut (add a little blue locite tight).

Like Ron said. You'll have to either redo the crush sleeve or make sure the preload is the same as before on the bearing. I have seen that done using a beam style inch-pound torque wrench, but try to find one of those.

Guess I needs to reiterate.Ok,yes the yoke can be unbolted/bolted (nut) from the front w/o going inside.BUT,I think you should get inside,at least to inspect.

Agree with Special-K if you can move the yolk up and down with shaft removed. Also turn the yolk (both wheels off ground) to check for rough bearings.

i had the axle apart this summer and checked and the bearings are fine. the yolk is worn where the u-joint is allowing the joint to slide back and forth. so it sounds like i can replace it without opening it up. i'll go by the driveline parts shop get another one and a new u-joint then i will hopefully be vibration free!!!
