Re: Wtb Dana 44 Hd Hubs
FYI the locking hubs will work from F250 fords as well, prior to '77. If you are looking for spindles as well, is there a reason why you want to go with the weaker design of the HD44? (the bolts have a tendency to loosen and shear off.)

Re: Wtb Dana 44 Hd Hubs
I would shy away from the HD version if you could avoid it. Everybody has the normal 44 parts sitting around, but the HD stuff is more rare. This is especially important if you break in the middle of nowhere, good luck finding spares.

Re: Wtb Dana 44 Hd Hubs
The ways its looking I may just get 6 lug rims, and hold off until I can get a D60 for the front. I was just wanting a 10bolt/44 8 lug?

Re: Wtb Dana 44 Hd Hubs
I think the very opposite is true. If you intend to go offroad trail riding, or any other aggressive driving, you should have the HD parts not only on the truck, but also some HD spares IN the truck. All of the parts that make a Dana 44 8 Lug different from a Dana 6 Lug are quite a bit heavier duty . There's a reason for that, DURABILITY.
Be true to what you intend to use the vehicle for and don't compromise. Just my opinion, 72longbed |

Re: Wtb Dana 44 Hd Hubs
Stock for stock the internal style is better. ANY external style lockout has a tendency to shear the bolts off holding the hub onto the axle. This can be fixed however. I talked to my buddy about the HD44, there is a stud kit available now that will fix the achilies heel of the HD44, so I guess with that fixed it is the better of the two to have. Comparing apples to apples, the HD hub supposedly is stronger,(more contact area) otherwise the axle shafts are the same. They are both rated at 3500# of torque IRC. Most people break stub shafts before they break hubs. If you are open in the front, the chances of either axle failing are slight compared to either a limited slip, or a locker. Possibly the HD has bigger bearings, possibly allowing for more of a load to be placed on the front axle For what we do, either would get the job done, however I still prefer the internal style simply because of parts availability.
I agree with keeping spares with you when you go places is the smart thing to do. Nobody likes it when an idiot breaks down in front of them and they have to wait for them to find parts. X(.
