Hey, i'm getting ready to set up the '67 i bought a while back to be a 2-horse trailer pull queen. i don't know much about the coils spring rear ends, so i stick with leafs & 4X4's...

Anyway, is this going to be an OK truck (coil spring rear end) to pull the trailer (~2K empty)?

if not, what do i need to be careful of, or add to make it an OK thing to do?

A 1/2 ton will pull 5000 pounds fairly well. I pull as much as 9000 short distances with no problems. A 3/4 ton with coils and apropriate gearing/engine combo could probably handle quite a bit.

You should have about 10 percent of the trailer's weight as tongue weight. That would mean you'll have about 200 pouns tongue weight. It would be about like me standing on the rear bumper.

I have a 72 with rear coils, I pull a twenty foot fiberglass boat & trailer, not sure how much it weighs. I put one in lowering front coils, three inch lowering rear coils, front & rear sway bars with polyurethane bushings, an adjustable track bar with poly bushings, a quick ratio steering box. The truck drives straight and I don't have any issues with towing the boat long distance (over an hour one way) up & down hills and around curves. Everything tracks straight, the only issue I have is with the boat and trailer hitched up and a full bed of camping equipment, I ride on the factory bump stops on the rear.

I had a 68 c20 on coils all around and used it with a slide in camper . It was fine , and we loaded the %&*# out of it .

i have pulled about 14,000 pounds with my C10 coil spring no problem. yeah the back end was a little low probably about 1500 pound tongue weight but my motor had no problem getting it moving. i had a 2 horse slant trailer loaded about 6,000 lbs and still beat every ricer who wanted to race. (DISCLAIMER: even though it is possible i do not recomend attempting any of the previously stated

) oh yeah it has a 2/4 drop on it too
I think i need to upgrade to a 1 ton diesel

You could look into some stock height HD coils or 3/4 ton springs and some stock style helper springs. I am positive that you would be able to pull your trailer....I have seen 3/4 tons springs and stock helpers springs used on a 2wd pulling truck very very successfully..

Thanks for all the replies! I wasn't concerned about the motor/tranny combo, just the coil rear end... Y'all have eliminated my fears, thanks for the input!

Since it has heated and compressed springs all the way around, they'll be getting replaced. i've got new fronts from my old '72 (that never got installed before it was wrecked), that i plan on re-using. guess i'll get 3/4T coils to replace the springs in the rear...

I used a`70 C/10 with a Reading steel utility cap&ladder rack on the bed and filled it with tools:in the side boxes,in the bed,and on the racks.The original old stock coils let the rear drop`n`sway a bit.I installed 3/4t coils and AirLift bags inside them.I could air-up when needed.

My SWB 1/2-ton had (from the factory) a set of 2000-lb coil springs. The P.O. pulled a 26-ft travel trailer with it, using a 2-inch hitch receiver. Said it did way better than the 98 Silverado he replaced it with.
