sm465 help

I have a sm465 which I planned on using. I had the transmision tilted forward on garage floor to keep all the gear oil from running out through the countershaft bearing but I shortly noticed gear oil dripping from the input shaft. Is this normal or is there a seal which should be replaced? Also after the transfer case was removed and I could turn the mainshaft more easily, I heard a slight scraping noise. It seems to be there in all gears. The transmission has been sitting for a few years but seems very tight and smooth. Any advice would be great.

Better replace the input shaft's seal. Is the scaping noise in the transmission or tranny? Might not hurt to run by a tranny shop and see if they would take a quick look at it. A place did that for me and didn't even charge me.

The noise is coming from the transmission. Would the input shaft seal be easy to change at home with standard tools? I was planning on going by a shop but the more I know before hand the less likely I'll be to get the input shaft.

Re: sm465 help

I have copies of the GM factory overhaul manual for the SM465 4-speed trans. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Re: sm465 help

Found the problem. Removed the front bearing retainer and after looking closer (under all the grime) discovered that the sleeve the release bearing rides on had previously been broken off and welded back on. The scraping noise was coming from a spot of weld which was slightly contacting the input shaft. The leak was there because the oil seal wasn't, It was actually missing. Went by the local gm dealership and picked up a new bearing retainer which included the seal.
