Smile 4X4 Frame Progress

Well I got the 73-up engine & swaybar crossmembers in the 72 SWB frame today. I mounted the engine crossmember in the C series BBC position. Since I`m using a divorced 205 anyway it won`t matter.

Interesting. I also plan on using a 73up X-member in a K20 burb frame for facilitating a BBC swap.

For what use is the X-member behind the 73up engine X-member? I don't think I've seen such on a 67-72 4x4 frame. Just the front & engine & tranny X-members (plus X-members further back but not engine/driveline related).

Someone is showing pics of how to install a BBC in a 67-72 4x4 and no one replies? What's up with that? This site is getting lame. Hopefully our usually sharp board members just missed the fine print in your sig.

You're going with a Clark 5-speed and divorced NP205? Interesting choices. I got a tip. I have a '71 IHC Travelall with a divorced, pass-drop NP205 stock. The inner frame measurements between my '71 K20 burb and the IHC are the same. I measured their inside frame to frame distances with a tape ruler.

I'm confident that one could use a '70s IHC Travelall divorced NP205 to include the cradle w/frame L-brackets mount by simply drilling 2 holes in each frame rail (4 total). The frame cradle is overhead, so you might have sheetmetal clearance issues under the cab. Also no skidplate. I think the IHC NP205 has 32-spline I/O shafts, but I'm not sure because I've never looked. It has 1310 yokes, but 1350 or 1410 yokes would likely fit all around if it has 32-spline shafts.

Keep us posted on your BBC into a 4x4 progress. Keep me posted, at least.

Wink Re: 4X4 Frame Progress

That crossmember your talking about is the 2 WD bell housing crossmember. This was a 2 WD frame and that crosmember was mounted in the BB posistion so I used that for a starting point. I think I can let it in the frame, it should clear the front driveshaft. The front crossmember is the 73-up swaybar one.

Re: 4X4 Frame Progress

Willis,

Do you have any closeups of where the rear hangers for the front springs mount in relation to the rear (bellhousing) crossmember?

I will be using 67-72 front springs. I just measured the 73-up from the center of the axle front, to mount the swaybar crossmember. I think it was like 15" front to center of the front swaybar brackets.

You've pulled the cradle crossmember out of a 2wd frame and installed a 73up X-member to throw in a BBC and you'll also switch to leaf springs with a 4x4 conversion???

Excellent!!!

Re: 4X4 Frame Progress

If you get a chance to grab those fender emblems for a decent price, I'd appreciate it!
