Motor mounts on a Z'd Frame - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm getting ready to Z the frame on my 72 short box. My question is has anyone moved the stock V8 motor mounts forward so the HEI isnt burried into the firewall. If someone has done this please let me know if theres any problems that go with this mod. And if anyone has done something different to move the engine forward your help would be great. THANKS

You have at least 3" from the cap to the fire wall. How much Z are you going to do ?

Damn 3"!?!?

Wish I had that much clearance, I nearly have to loosen the engine and rock it forward to get the HEI cap off and I haven't even cut my frame yet. To answer your question though, if you chose to move it forward I think you can go up to 3 inches forward before you start running into problems. My only question is how people are making their mounts fit on the crossmember when they move them forward sinse there is no real flat spot for them.

You may have to run a short water pump and electrice fans there will be no room for a stock engine mounted fan. You might also have to use a pusher and mount it in front of the ran.

It looks to me like there is 3" and I have the motor between the 6 cyl and 8cyl position.

I think we all wish we had 3 more inches. I went to the garage lastnight, moved the motor mount and where the front bolt holr was is now the rear, drilled 1 new hole on each side and drilled 2 new holes in the x-member and there it was. Now I have enough room to get my had behind the HEI. Before I could bearly get my fingers back there. Also there is no need to change the water pump, there is plenty of room for the flex fan.

so no issues with the radiator or the fans by doing that? i misgt have to do that, how much of a Z did you do?

I had a 4" Z and my 327 with my distributor i moved forward 3"... moved it all forward, just had to drill one more hole for the bottom holes. I was running dual electric fans from a 95 camaro with the radiator, and i had no clearance problems at all. Gave my distributor plenty of clearance. It was on a 65 chevy panel, and i believe the firewalls are the same or close on those... but yeah, worked great. Funny thing is... with a 700r4... a buick roadmaster wagon driveline fit perfect with a different u-joint... neat eh.

wish I would have read this thread two weeks ago. I cut a chunck out of my firewall. Plenty of room but would have looked better uncut.
