Power Steering Upgrade
Hi, I am upgrading from manual to power steering on my 1972 C-10 with a 307 motor, after doing a dry run on the install of the brackets and pump, I found I have a clearance problem with the alternator belt hitting the mounting bolt of the steering pump bracket, has anyone installed a p/s pump and did they have the same problem I have, and if so what did you do to correct the problem.Here's a couple of pics

try a longer belt to the PS pump and move it futher towards the drivers side?? been awhile since i messed with that

the 67 i helped convert to power steering we just ran the alternator and power steering off one belt

I can move the pump, but the belt will still hit the bolt on the p/s pump bracket, thanks for the thought. And because of the stagger between the pump pulley and the alternator, I can't use one belt.

oh we used washers and longer bolt to line eerything up lol may someone got the answer for ya

You are fighting the old problem when you are running non-stock parts. That is not 72 correct PS or pulleys, so you have to hack/modify to try and get it to work.

Yep, nuts, bolts, spacers. It's trial by error. I had a 4x4 I added headers to and the front header bolt used the pwr steering bracket. I used a piece of conduit to space it. Have a little patience. Try to find a local truck set up as yours for a model.

Better yet, try to go to a junkyard and get everything off one veheicle so it matches up

I got my brackets and pulley from alan groves and it works perfect for any short water pump, as stated above your using a metric pump and its going to be trial and error, this will be the 2cnd v8 that will get there brackets this weekend.....

You can also think about movin the alt. to the pass. side with later model brackets. worked for me, but the heads have to be drilled for front mounts.

If you want air cond later- leave the alternator on the driver side. You can probably also fabricate your way around this. I used a modified Speedway Motors bracket for my power steering pump -- and fortunately still got to modify it. 8-)
