How can I tell if I have the correct core support for my 68

I recall reading somewhere that there was a difference between the 67-68 core supports and the 69-72 core supports. Pic would be great.

THE EAZIEST WAY THAT I KNOW OF IS TO LOOK ALONG THE BOTTOM FOR THE WELD NUTS FOR THE GRAVEL SHEILD. THEY WERE A 67-68 ONLY & THEY WON'T BE ON A 69-72 RAD. SUPPORT. JOHN THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER DIFFERENCES & THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGABLE. I USE THIS METHOD FOR IDENTIFING THEM ONLY. JOHN

Can they be converted? I knew they were different, but what makes them incompatable?

If You Look On The Headlight Socket Welded To The Support There Is A Year Date On It. You Might Have To Clean The Crud Off First.

I just went through this on mine, 69-up core supports had headlight buckets spot welded to the support.

Re: How can I tell if I have the correct core support for my 68

The biggest difference is the in the headlight mounting area. The 67/68 headlight buckets mount direct to the core while 69-72 core supports have brackets spotwelded to the core for the buckets. I should add this if for Chevys.

I think you can convert a 67/68 to a 69/72 core by adding the headlight bucket brackets but there are some differences in going backward from a 69/72 to 67/68. The stamping was changed to not roll the edge of the headlight hole out of the way like the 67/68.

The nuts that John talks about are another difference. The lower valance was used only in 67/68. Chevy and GMC both used the valance. In 69 it was eliminated in both Chev and GMC. I think you could get by without it for all but a serious retoration 67/68.

Another very minor difference is that early 67 core supports do not have the captured nut for mounting the dual note horn behind the left headlight. I am not sure when GM added this option and thus the captured nut.

These are the biggest differences I have found but there may others I am not aware of.

Hope this helps. Any other questions or comments please post them.

There is a ebay item that says it is a 67-68. Is this what I should be looking for?

only thing i can tell you is that if you want to use a 4core radiator the support in the ebay pic will have to be modified slightly

You Can NOT modify a 69-72 to fit a 67-68. The headlights are in diffirent locations side to side.
