wheel backspacing ???
what does backspacing on wheels mean im buying some 15x8 rims with 255/70/15 tires to put on my 69 chevy truck stock height and i can get 4" or 5" backspacing but i dont know what that means

Backspacing is the number of inches from the wheel mounting surface on the back side of the rim to the outside edge of the rim. If you lay it down and put a straight edge across the rim and measure straight down to the WMS then that will give you the backspace of that wheel. A 10" wide wheel with 4" of backspacing will have the tire setting closer to the outer edge of the body than the same wheel with a 5" BS.

If you lay a straight edge (ruler to some folks) flat side down, on the back side of the wheel, then measure from that point to the back side of the lug flange, you will have the backspacing for that wheel.
More backspacing means the wheel tucks in more, when viewed along the side of the vehicle. There are positive and negative off-sets, but check out Wheel Vintiques, or Summitt Racing. There are illustrations that show what I mean, if you need more help.

from my experience with my stock 67 rear end --- 4" backspace on an 8" wide wheel is the most backspacing I want --- 3" would be even better. Problems that arise are rubbing inside fender well or outer body. Goint to a 10" wide wheel --my preference would be again 4" backspacing but most are 4.5"--makes inside rubbing of tire on fenderwell an issue.

wheel backspacing -- Nascar look
Looks like I will be ordering 2 more 15x10" wide wheels - tires are 265x70x15's -4.5" backspacing. paid my wife off to leave her crocheting to help me determine if anything was even close to rubbing coming down a steep drive and turning hard to the right. Not even close. Stock height springs.
I have 72 spindles with disc on the front. worked out great. The rear 10" could come out 1/2" to 1" to make it very even front to rear. Last edited by dennislbrooks; 03-06-2006 at 08:43 PM. |
