OK, so I turned the wheel from 12 o'clock position all the way around twice (2xs) and then stopped at the 1 o'clock position - the drive shaft turned twice - exactly. I can't seem to figure out what I have here..... 2(2)/ 2.17 = 1.84?? Thanks for the help!

I assume that the 2.17 is for two turns of the tire plus the distance from 12 o'clock to 1 o'clock. Shouldn't it be 2 + 1/12 = 2.083?

2(2)/2.083 = 1.92

Is it possible that maybe you only spun the tire 1 + 1/12 times around?

you are correct on the 2.083 (can't copy right today) - I spun the wheel twice plus the 1/12th - 98% sure - and there again, maybe I can't count either.... hahahah but it makes sense no? one turn of the drive shaft gets me 2+1/12th rotations at the wheel? Has this gotten to the "too messy to figure out stage?".... 1and1/24th rotation of the wheel got me 1/2 rotation of the drive shaft.....

The key to this system is the ten turns of the wheel. that should help with the accuracy, and give you larger numbers to put into the equation.

I would put a chalk mark on your drive shaft, and a mark on your tire, just to be sure that you are making complete turns.

When was the last time you changed the differential gear lube? Now is a good time to try out that new Royal Purple Differential lube (It's Synthetic and might even get you some better gas milage and help out those gears and bearings in there, they like fresh food too) and at the same time you can find the numbers stamped on the ring gear (10:39)or you can count how many teeth you have on both the ring & pinion to get an acurate assesment instead of guessing.

I'll probably be upgrading when I get to that part of the project - I don't know how well what's in there will get along with the new engine.... Just trying to get an idea of what's hiding in the 34 year ol' pumpkin.......

it's an attempt to keep other from stating the obvious - like when people say "I have this banging sound when I'm going down the road" and the first thing someone throws out there is "do you have a flat?" or "was your door closed?"

if it's original and not been changed,the most common gear ratio's for these trucks are 3.07's or 3.73's.since your truck is a 6cyl. and a 3 speed i'll bet it's got 3.73's.if it does't have the power to get out of it's own way,then it's got 3.07's....
