what do you think of someone fiberglassing a hole in the floorboard, that don't have a welder, and they don't make a specific replacement piece for it, would it work very good to do it, need suggestions

You experienced in glass? I don't really see a problem with it. Since it's in the floorboard, carpet will cover it right? How big of a hole are we talking?

no, but am going to try it, no, carpet won't at the moment, but i will be puttin, a insulation type mat down from the home depot, 12"x 3" probably

Why not rivet a patch over the hole then use the glass to seal up around it?

i don't have anything to form to rivet over it, take that back, i can't get the metal to bend like it needs to

i thought there was some sort of adheasive that you could use for bonding metal to metal.

also, i dont know how well fiberglass will bond with metal, or at all. plastic and metal shrink and expand at different rates and will crack. it really isnt that hard to fab up something and have someone weld it.

C-10 Volvo makes a good point. If it's easy to get to, and not that big, I'll bet a welding shop (or just a local guy with a welder) would'nt charge that much to patch it. If it's gonna be covered, JB Weld works well on bonding metal to metal. Some people hate it, but it works. But of course, then you'd be back in the position of fabbing the patch piece.

i believe in JB weld, we use it at the vo-tech sometimes, it works on alot of stuff

You can buy a piece of thin sheetmetal from Home Depot or Lowes and you can form it with your hands or a hammer. Then rivet it to the floorboard. I used the same sheetmetal to cover the 4-spd hole in my transmission hump.

My dad was a big fan of repairing metal with fiberglass. I always found that odd, since he knew how to weld, and had the right equipment. Everything on the old car I inherited from him that was patched with fiberglass is falling apart. It all rusts out around the fiberglass patches.

I would try to find someone to weld it. If not, I would spend a little time forming a patch panel, rivet it into place, and seal it with seam sealer from a bodyshop supply place.

3m makes a wicked panel adhesive-once it's on it's on for good- alot of the new cars are "glued" together on the assembly line-bang the crap out of a couple pieces of sheetmetal till you get one right-kinda fun-good luck

i'm not even close to being a body man,,but alway's being short on money you learn a lot,,,a patch that size on the floorboard with a big hammer,piece of wood or whatever you can make something close to what you need,,maybe like mylilbowtie said,,little more info and these guy's can tell ya just about anything....

My Dad is ALSO a fan of repairing metal with fiberglass. He too knows how to weld and does paint and bodywork when he feels like it.

The key to make sure you get rid of ALL the old rust before patching anything. If you have a 12x3 whole, make it a 12.5x3.5 hole that you're attaching to clean metal. Prep the metal with rust-proofing (POR15 or equivalent) and glass over the top. Make sure you follow-up with a good primer/sealer and a topcoat or you will rust again.

Even a welded-in patch panel will re-rust if not primered and top-coated.

It doesn't matter if you use a sheet metal patch or glass over the hole it will still continue to rust. You need to cut the rust out, or clean and neutralize it with a rust conditioner like Metal Mort.

Once you have done that, it's not that hard to form a patch panel and weld, pop rivet, or panel bond it in place...
