Smile 3 speed questions, 343 and 341

In regards to 3speed tranny's. There are the saginaw 341 and 343 in our trucks. Are they the same in dimensions or close?. The 343 was the later built 3speed. What is the advantage of the 343?

I found this article intresting. http://classictrucks.com/tech/0505cl_disc2/index.html
I talked with a guy from summit a few years ago and he suggested this mastershift kit instead of the cheapie universal shifter. He compared it to the comp/plus shifter. I think this one clears the bench seat. Has anyone on this board used this better shifter? The price is $200 Vs. the universal at $90

Re: 3 speed questions, 343 and 341

The saginaw trans came into the car scene aroud 65/66, & got into the trucks in around 67 for the sb V8 equipped trucks. Along about 69, it was standard equip in the I6 & sb powered trucks, & the old muncie (4 bolt side cover was gone). the stuff I played with was through about 72 on the trucks, & I never saw any diff in the boxes as far as diamentions, or strenght of parts(car or truck). There were some different ratios tho. You might ask the ? in the 73-87 board, but I was told that some of the later truck trannys were longer(mid 70's?). The shifter you posted looks like a nice unit, & IMO , I would spend the extra for that Hurst(thats all we ran back in the day ). Best of luck...... L
