garage/shop heater

hey what are you using for an inexpensive shop/garage heater? pics would be great too.....thanks

I have an old Martin (Dearborn off brand) space hater that was given to me. It's hooked up to a 7 gal RV propane bottle I obtained from a friend who owns an RV dealership. The bottle was old so I got it free. I did have to buy the pressure regulator which was $6. One bottle full costs about $12 and lasts a long time.
With a whopping $18 invested in my heating system, it's lite enough that I can move it to where ever I'm working so I don't have to heat the entire 3400 sqft shop.

3400 sq. ft.????????? Dang that is big. Mine is 1200 and I thought I had a good size place. Once I put the heat in mine I am going to use 220V Ceiling mount heaters. Cheaper than running 110V jobs.

Have a reddy heat jet heater that was on sale for about 100 at lowes one year. Suppose to heat a 5000 sqft area, doesn't take long to heat our 1200 sq ft shop We have it on a shelf up near the ceiling so the jet isn't constantly blowing on you and an old fan from a school that was shut down to pull the heat down works pretty good, of course our shop is pretty well insulated so even if its below freezing outside once we get it warm inside just turning the heater back on for a few minutes every couple of hours keeps the shop warm if the doors aren't constantly being opened and closed.

I just open my garage door and it is 70 degrees outside. The summer time its a differant story I need a cooler.

i have a forced air wood furnace inside a steel lined room in the back of a leantoo i added on one end of the garage. the heat is ducted in the shop and an air return duct filters air and draws it from the shop back through the furnace. when i paint i block off the air return in the shop and draw air from outside through the furnace room where it is pre heated and an exuast fan on the other end of the shop evacuates the paint fumes.the exuast fan has a home built manifold that has 5 4"ports on it. this is where i hook 4"pvc pipe, some perforated and some solid , it just slips togather and can be set up to exuast from any point or points of shop to remove contamints right at sourse like both sides or vehicle both above and below or all on one wall. and of course there is ac in the summer

I have two coleman space heaters that mount on normal propane tanks.
Heats the 20X38 shed nice.....No beer fridge needed in the winter...
Propane fridge in the summer.....

I got a forced hot air heater for $20. It runs on fuel oil or diesel and is much more convinent than the propane I was using. It's out of a mobile home and works great. Chris

I'm using a 110K BTU propane torpedo heater with a thermostat on the plug. Works pretty well, but needs clearance in back and a LOT in front.

My new shop is getting a permanent heater called a Hot Dawg heater. It is around the $2000.00 (canadian) mark installed but is well worth it. It doesn't have a standing pilot light, is low profile and is SAFE. Plus we sell and install them at my company. The wifes single car garage is getting a 35,000 btu direct vent heater to keep her and the baby warm. Unfortunately the dog doesn't come with the heater.

When i built my two story addition the bottom floor is my two bay garage (24x24 ) I put a force hot air gas furnace in the attic and piped two eight in pipes into my garage which is completly insulated. double pane windows . It stays around 55-60 all winter. I just need ac.

A friend of mine's brother tried to make a wood burning stove using 55gallon drum barells. If it was warm it was smoky, when it wasn't smoky you were cold.
Not many people had to use heaters this winter. As long as it's 50F I'm okay. Thats what flannels are for.

thats how we use to be to, now the reddy kerosene heater has spoiled me, keep it around 65 in the shop at all time that I am working, perfect for jeans and a T-shirt.

We had one of those several years ago and it put out an AMAZING amount of heat. We never had any smoke problems with it, maybe it was the chimney?

Heres mine, made it myself... runs on free wood, and only cost me the rod to weld it together. Sometimes to hot to sit by and have to move closer to the door when its -25c

Hey kelsfine69, I see you have a Flamemaster furnace beside that fireplace, must have cracked heat exchangers so you went to wood. Currently I have a wood fireplace in my 20 x 24 shop but I'm getting tired of chopping wood this will be the last winter for wood, going forced air natural gas furnace. Hit the power and instant heat.Wood works great but getting wood takes time away from the real work.
