Hello,
I am new to the rebuilding stuff and relatively new to the truck scene. I have a different cab for my 68 chevy and I'm wondering what the legality issues are to putting the replacement cab on my existing truck. Will I have to have a new title made with seperate numbers? (Vin # and Frame #)
The reason I'm asking is I have seen sever cabs for sale that state clear title or salvage title or vehicles for sale that say the #'s match. I'm kind of lost on the matter.

Depends on the state. Some say the title is what the cab is, other what the frame is. If it were I think I'd cross vin tags with the new cab as long as you know the previous truck isn't stolen. There's been many a discussion on this. Call your tag agency. Here in OK on older vehicles they just check the cab vin. #'s match usually refers to the engine/transmission

That won't work either. I have changed the engine and tranny. This project gets harder by the day. Oh well if it were easy we wouldn't have to worry about rebuilds, right. LOL

The numbers match thing,motor/trans etc,is a collectors authenticity varification on whether a vehicle is still "as-built".This generally only applies to vehicles with rare options or is a rare configuration.The model # tells if it was Stepside/Fleetside.All factory options are listed on the VIN-spec sheet.
The serial # is all that matters where you are concerned.The laws vary from state to state,but basically you want the #-plate on the cab to be the same on the title because that`s where they`ll look.Some people are concerned that the rivets we use are not the star rivets as used at the factory.That`s why some cabs are sold with title when the rest is scrapped.Every now and then these rivets turn up for sale(rosebud rivets).I,personally,don`t worry.It`s an old vehicle and I removed the plate to protect it during the process of restoration to protect it from damage

.If anyone was to get called out on this swapping at any point,they would just have to go through the reconstructed title process.

call your DMV or who ever, and ask about the legality.
With that being said, I'd just clopse the door of the garage, and swap the plate out and just not tell anyone important.

As far as I know, they only ID on these cabs is the glovebox door and vin tag.... So what's the big deal if you wanted to remove your tag to paint behind it and put it back on

What about in this situation? Can you tell if its an original shortbox by checking vin #'s? I have a 72 chevy cab(off a LWB truck) on my 72 GMC SWB frame, i was gonna use the chev numbers because i am using a chev front clip instead of the GMC. The question is will the truck be registered as a lwb instead of a short?

on a chevy VIN, you can not tell the wheel base nor bed type from the VIN.

The vin# is on the driver side frame,in two spots.One is on top of the rail under the cab and the other is on top of the rail,just in front of the cross member,in the engine compartment.

Every time I have taken each of my trucks in for registration, they have just come out and compared the title to the vin plate.

I was not saying that your frame will be inspected..just relaying the fact that the vin # is stamped on the frame.It might very well be useless information?
