Question Where can you get OEM 15X8's whees at a decent price?

Geeeze. I've been calling around for some 15X8, 5 lug wheels in OEM style for some dog dish caps and everyone wants $90 a wheel, in painted steelies? Seems like a few years ago they were around $45(dont mind that).

Its hard to cough up that kind of dough for stock looking wheels. for an extra $25 I can go Crager SS or for less $ I can go smoothie wheels but they won't accept the stock caps. Was there any trucks that had 5on5 in 15X8 besides ralley wheels? Most are 15X6. Or is there anyone selling these wheels new in the $50 range? Thanks

You can buy painted Ralleys from Summit for 50-70 bucks. 5 and 6 luggers.

Maybe try the classified ads. There may be some wheels in your neck of the woods.

I think he wants original wheels for 67-72, not rallys, cause he said he wants to use a hubcap. I know they didn't make anything wider than a 6 or 7 I think, but wheek places will cut the center out and reweld them to a wider wheel. Call wheel vintiques or Centerline, heck a good machine shop could do it, or even you with two sets of wheels, time, welder, etc cut the wide wheels for the width and weld in the original center. I have seen it done and it works, but I'd pay someone to do it right.

I just found your solution, David. Look in Jegs. They have Cragar chrome Smoothies ranging from 50-60 dollars apiece, with the smoothie hubcaps. 14x6,14x7,
15x6,15x7 and 15x8 sizes. Hope this helps.

My friend bought a set of those with dual 5 bolt pattern at the swap meet last month. Gave $220 for the wheels, caps, nuts and valve stems, all new.

Re: Where can you get OEM 15X8's whees at a decent price?

The OEM-type wide rims have been the more expensive way to go for quite a while now.I paid $75 A piece for 9.75x16.5s in the 80s.Then about $50 each for sandblasting & powdercoating,Then there`s the cost of the hub caps. It`s much easier and cheaper to go buy dime-a-dozen custom wheels. But,that`s why if you stick to your plan, you`ll have something that is cool in a subtle way that no one else will have.Post a WTB for what you want.I did, here, and got a set of 8x15 5-lugs for $100.

Re: Where can you get OEM 15X8's whees at a decent price?

Being a member of SEMA we here alot about the wheel industry and the latest out is steel wheel manufacturers are beginning to feel a real pinch due to escalating steel prices driving the cost of steel wheels upwards to the point they are becoming nearly as expensive to make as the aftermarket alloy wheels.
So that should help explain the jump in steel wheel prices.
Many manufactures overseas are now also pushing for requiring the USA to set safety standards for rims. Currently the US has no requirements on wheel strength specs unlike overseas in most other countries, so the industry is seeing more & more rim failures as new companies come onto the market trying to capture a part of the aftermarket rim industry so make sure you buy a rim produced by a reputable manufacturer.
Its amazing that with all the regulations the goverment shoves our way that they don't set minimum guidelines for rim manufacturers for safety.

I have a set of Wheel Vintiques on mine - 15x8 5-lug. The current tires are too low profile, but I think they look great! Figure about $300 for the set w/rings and centers (I think).

I like the painted steel wheel idea because they wont need the constant attention a chrome wheel would, ie look at all the rusted chrome wheels out there. This truck won't be a show truck but will likely sit outside. I think a deep dish wheel with that center cap would look nice. Baby moons won't take the chevy caps. they have to have the outer ribs.

Can you paint those smoothies by scuffing up the chrome? Will paint adhere to a chrome wheel?

David,
I was in your same boat. I wanted stock, 6-lug, 15 inch wheels for my 4x4. However my 4x4 chassis is a 1971 so it has stock disk brakes up front. ONLY wheels made to go over disk brakes work so I was limited to 1971+ wheels. Regardless of the lack of backwards compatibility I figured junk yards would be full of them.

I was wrong. I looked and looked and looked. I didn't even want 8 inch wide ones.

Finally one day last fall I was in the shop I used to work at and mentioned my search to they guys that work there. One guy said he was cutting up a 1976 half ton and when he was done I could have all the wheels. Now I got 4 wheels, the mid 70s style caps, and all the lug nuts for NOTHING. One thing about using a wheel that has been around for 30 years is you know it isn't going to come apart like GMCPaul's was talking about with new steel wheels.

This spring I'm going to have them blasted then spray them white.

Just keep looking. They are out there. And if GM made them I would try to find a used set.

Re: Where can you get OEM 15X8's whees at a decent price?

If you find the OEM-types they where made by Kelsey-Hayes,the OEM supplier and the tryed and true design found on nearly every US car of that era and a couple before.
