Automatic floor shifter advice needed! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've been considering on my build to go with a automatic floor shifter but I'm concerned about the height of the shifter. I've seen them mounted on a console to raise them closer to the driver but I don't think I want a console. Can anyone share their experiences about this????

What kind of shifter are you planning to use? Linky in my siggy shows my 68 with a 23" Lokar shifter.

B&M makes a mega-shifter with a longer stick for pickups. They also have a universal auto shifter that looks more like a 3-speed manual shifter.

I like the looks of the lokar shifters in our trucks, from the short to the long. That is the way I'd go if I was doing a floor mount automatic.

I went with the Mega-shifter also and have no complaints. I have nothing against the Lokars.

B&M does have a Mega Shifter for trucks. I have one mounted in my 68 stepside and it is a great setup. If you go to the post under the heading of "Floor shifter with bench" dated 2-22-06 you will see pictures of the Mega shifter mounted in a couple of different trucks. This may be of help.

i used a hurst indy shifter in my 69 and its plenty high, however i do have a high hump floor board, but it should still work fine...

I am in the process of switching out from column to floor and I decided to go with the Mega Shifter as well, I also went with the short one mainly because I didnt want this to be sticking way up, after getting it and just putting it on the floor I knew that is what I wanted, I also have the high hump in my 67.
I went with the 80690 the shorter of the two and the handle is even with the top of my bench seat, if that helps..

I think I've decided to go with the Lokar. I like the look much better. That big shifter box looks a little bulky and that's not something I like. Thanks for all the suggestions and pics!

You won't be sorry. You pay more for Lokar, but the quality is well worth it.

Lokar. Got mine from a board member. I think it's the 16" one. I like it better than the 23" Price was well worth it.

I have been lookin' at the Lokar shifters, too. You can get them from Summit Racing and pay less than what the Lokar catalog shows. I have both of their catalogs, so lookin' up the part number in Lokar, then finding the part in Summits' catalog is an easy putt. Don't have them in front of me right now, but will look later and edit the post.

But, the 23" shifter is a start. I'd like to have one a bit longer, with a skull for a shift knob....all in agreement with my plan to have my truck be a tribute to hot rods of the fifties.....satin black, red steelies, you know the drill.

Here's a picture of a 16" Lokar on a high hump w/ 4WD. I wanted to mimic a stock floor shifter as much as possible.

If you want the shifter to control your backup lights and neutral safety both, you'll need to get a control box and relays also (more $). The 2nd and 3rd pics are of the relays and control unit.
