transmission questoin

Im looking at a 91 full size GMC truck 1/2 ton to buy with a 305 and auto. Does this truck come with 700r4? If yes is that a good year? Im buying the truck for the tranny.

Re: transmission questoin

I believe that truck would have had one, but not positive. They started putting them in diesel pickups starting in 1982.

Without pictures, the 700 can be identified by the oilpan having a rectangular shape being longer front-to-rear than side-to-side and held to the transmission by 16 bolts, 3 bolts front, 3 bolts rear, 5 bolts left side, and 5 bolts right side.

Most of the problems were resolved by 1987 from '82, when they were introduced. The 91 is probably OK for a mild motor (but that's a whole other story).

Re: transmission questoin

It may have a 4L60e, very similiar to a 700R4. The 700R4 will have a TV cable that connects to the throttle linkage. The 4L60e will not and requires a computer to control it.

Re: transmission questoin

I'm pretty sure the 4l60e was introduced in 92. If it is the 4l60e, I think you will find this on the tranny (not 100% certain of this). The E means it's the electronice version of the 4L60 or 700R4. As for the 4L60, known as the 700R4, 91 would be a good year.

Re: transmission questoin

'93 was the first year for the 4L60E. That truck will have a 700R4 (4L60), and it is one of the best years for the non-computer version.
