temp guage
I just intalled a new mech temp guage sender is on front of intake by thermostat. I have a few question at idle it stays right about 190 when driveing it will creep up to around 200 then drop right to 186 to 190 then stay at 190 for a while then creep again. My questions are it sounds like the thermostat is like a 190 is it normal for the guage to move so much? is it because it is mech are is it more the placement.
Thanks

Re: temp guage
I think that it probably has to do with placement, what does everyone else think?

Re: temp guage
Sounds like with the sending unit being right next to the thermostat, as the thermostat opens and closes it is showing on your gauge. If you were to move the sending unit to the head maybe it would show a more steady reading. Are there any other ideas?

Re: temp guage
I dont mind the moving lets me know the thermo is working I suppose. Would running a cooler thermo be of any benifit for me? It is a daily driver and never seems to overheat?

Re: temp guage
Running a cooler thermo would cause it to open say at 180 and probably stay open. Your heater would still work. I usually run a 180 in my engines. Maybe someone else has an idea on this?

Re: temp guage
It sounds like the gauge works fine. As the thermostat opens and closes, along with air flow through the core (driving vs. stopped) engine temp rises and falls. If you have had no problems with the 190, keep it. The engine is most efficent at 200-205.

Re: temp guage
Sounds to be right to me. The gauge is showing real time temperature readings. If you have the 190 keep it until the summer, then you can change it out, then this winter put the 190 back in to get the full heater effect on those cold mornings.
