Carrier bearing?

Last night I took down my rear dirve shaft, to install a new carrier bearing, and some u-joints. I got the u-joints out thanks to my cut-off wheel, but couldn't get the bearing to budge more than 1/32 of an inch or so. I got the dust cover off, but not the bearing.

Do I need to take it to NAPA?

Is there another way other than a BFH because I've tried that. Service manual says to use a slide hammer which I don't have. The spline is 6 inches long, I don't have a puller with arms that long.

thanks ahead of time for the ideas.

Re: Carrier bearing?

Took it down to NAPA over lunch, cause my wife wasn't home to talk to.

I always say a hammer has no buisness around a hunk of metal that spins 3000 RPM... you wouldn't do it to your crankshaft.

Re: Carrier bearing?

Yeah, if you've got it that far, a driveshaft shop wouldn't charge much labor to pull the yoke off the carrier bearing.

Re: Carrier bearing?

Yeah...I hate carrier bearings. I just had a 1 piece aluminum shaft made for my truck...had to modify the crossmember for it to clear, but all is well. Saves alot of trouble.

ROTFLMAO..............I bought three of the best carriers I could find in a three month period, and I need another one when I get the driveshaft back! Of-course, the torque I am putting through them isn't quite what GM designed them for. I thought about one of those new machined aluminum pieces, but I don't want to spend that much for the Cummins to chew it up and spit it out

Re: Carrier bearing?

Dude, something else is wrong then.
The carrier bearing should take all the power you can feed it. Your u-joints would break,or your shaft would twist and break before the carrier bearing would be afected by engine output.

Re: Carrier bearing?

Yep, Andy's right. But I still hate the hassle of trying to figure out what the problem really is when a simple solution is just a $150 1-piece dl.

Btw, I'll be putting mine up for sale if anyone wants one. It works perfectly, but I just don't need it anymore. I can give more info to a potential buyer-please contact me via PM.

Actually it was all of the above............. The first two times the carrier rubber failed, which killed the joints...............Last time, Shaft twisted up, joints broke, took out carrier(Order of accurance unknown)..............This time, new machine shaft, heavier joints, and we'll see what happens.

Too much on the Low end, and something has to give.............I am supprised it hasn't been the tranny yet.......
