got the scare of a life time...

last night driving my friends 67 c-10 sb was drving along shes normally good about keeping th oill and trans filled. but we was driving along and bam it started making that noise of death the dreaded blown motor knocking sound stoped at agas station and checked the oil no oil on the stick.run inside and got 4 quarts of oil dumped them in started it up same damn sound i was about to lose hope when i noticed the fan shoud loose the sucker had broke and was hitting the fan. finished breaking it off the res t of the way started the truck back up and no knocking. my question is can i run with out the shoud for a while or will it cause the truck to over heat not having it?

Re: got the scare of a life time...

You may get some heat issues without that shroud. I have them now and I have a brand new shroud on mine. PO couldn't keep it cool with the clutch fan so he tried an electric. It ain't helping.

Re: got the scare of a life time...

in the attempt to save weight, the previous owner of my 77 c10 ditched the shroud and inner fenders. nobody knows if it overheated since he also ditched the gauges.... that engine looked fine and worked, so i put it in the 72.

Re: got the scare of a life time...

I say keep a fan shroud, as far as overheating, if you don't want it to over heat and don't want the fan shroud, go to the 4 core radiator (unless you already have one)

Re: got the scare of a life time...

I'm running a mildly built big block 400hp without a shroud and it doesn't get to the first notch on the temp gauge...

I've also ran my truck without a fan shroud and had no problems. But I installed one for safety.

You'll get away without it until it gets hot outside but by then it'll be replaced, right.

Re: got the scare of a life time...

If that's something you conisider a "scare of a lifetime" you haven't lived near long enough yet.

Fan shrouds were put on for a reason, and not just to protect people from cuttin fingers off. I had a six banger that would overheat a lot with no shroud. Put a shroud on, no more overheating. Good luck gettin all the bugs outta that old truck, it's frustrating at times, but worth it.
