Re: gas gauge problem
Take the wire off the sender and watch the hand , when the switch is on. If it goes to full your gauge is probably bad... Something else you can try take the wire off the sender and stick a paper clip inside the wire connector and stick it to something that will ground it, if it goes back to where it was before you take the wire off, it's the gauge. I had kinda the same problem, mine was the gauge.. Plus you might need to check the wire all the way up to the fuse box.

Re: gas gauge problem
Most likely the resistor on the back of the gauge

Re: gas gauge problem
I just messed with the one in my blazer and I just took a wire off of the fuse block. (way easier to get to)
Open ground/bad resistor, it will go way past full. Grounded out, it will stay down on empty. Assuming all your connections/wiring is good. That's what I got from mine, I had a busted resistor wire on the sending unit. |

Re: gas gauge problem
i replaced the wire from the fuse box to the fuel tank and that didnt help the problem it is still going past full when i take the wire off with the switch on, then when i put the wire back on it goes down to empty, then i can cut the switch off and the hand will move up a little after a while. what do you think this would be?

Re: gas gauge problem
Check your printed circuit on the back of the cluster for breaks.

Re: gas gauge problem
You have a busted resistor, going way past full= infinite resistance=broken/incomplete circuit. Go to www.fix-a-gauge.com and get the fuel gauge replacement resistor and that should clear the issue up. If you have a multi meter you can check the resistor to see if it is the problem and iirc the reading should e around 68 ohms. You should also check the PCB(printed circuit board) on the back of the gauge cluster to assure you don't have a broken or burnt connection. olden days you were right, the float was cracked and full of gas. THANKS
